For me OGS is my baseline blend. Its the worst tobacco I smoke. And no - that's not a negative. What I'm saying is, for me, if it's not as good as OGS, why wouldn't I just smoke some OGS? The answer? I would just smoke the OGS instead.

My favorite vaper. I find I have to dry it out for hours for the sweetness to really come out - which happens towards the end of the bowl. Does anyone else have this experience?

I've got several tins of this that have been sitting in my cellar. I love it fresh but at what point do you think is the optimal "age" where it's really best? Mine have about 5 years on them

jacks6 - From what I've heard on this site, 5 years is a good age point for a virginia. Cigrmaster posted the 10 year OGS is "sublime" and I would certainly follow his recommendation to keep at least a few around that long. If it were me, I'd start sampling a tin now and every few years up to the 15 and 20 year marks if possible. I don't know that they would get measurably better after 10 though. Maybe post a thread about it!! You would get much better advice than mine if you did. Enjoy ! :puffy:

One reason I have been 'put off' by Va blends is the age thing. I don't feel as if I have the luxury of time to age them to their best flavor.

Repeated claims of "wait till there's some age on it" or, "this blend reaches it's zenith after about 5 years"

and then tasting a fresh tin of OGS, I get discouraged.

It's true. Virginia blends lose a lot of their snap and get fuller and more mellow with age. I managed to keep a tin of Escudo sealed for over a year before I smoked it and it had become much more subtle.

Some of these Virgina blends taste just fine to me right away. Escudo does.

I've got one tin of OGS on the shelf with about a year and a half on it.

For my money, in comparison, I'll take PS LNF over OGS.

I just tried my first bowl of OGS last night, and I loved it. Very glad that I picked up the 100g tin.

I am a huge Va flake fan- all brands and blends. I enjoy them so much that there are few I don't like (though Samuel Gawith's summer flake isn't treating me well right now). But Orlik Golden Sliced is an absolute standard. I cut my teeth on MacBaren's Va No. 1 ten years ago. Now I'm into McClelland blends. But OGS is a stand alone.

I'm primarily a burley smoker and have been trying to get into straight Virginias for the past year with not too good results. It may be that my palate is just too accustomed to burley, since that's all I have smoked for the past 35 yrs. I recently bought a 50 gram tin of OGS and I found it better then the straight Virginias I've smoked in the past. This just may be the one I've been looking for. I've smoked half the tin and so far I'm sold on this blend. I plan to purchase a few more tins in the future, but I'll always be a lover of Burley.

OGS is my go to, everyday smoke and I love it to death. With the recent 10% off for the month of June over at SP I was able to get enough to cellar for a long while. Delicious stuff. Better with even 3-6 months on it.
