First Time Smoking Without Relights

I feel like a normally have to relight about 5-8 times, but for the first time tonight I smoked a whole bowl without relighting once. I either packed it better than normal or probably smoked it way too fast...I am assuming it was the latter. But I just wanted to share my first experience without having to worry about relighting and just sitting down and enjoying my pipe. I feel it is a good milestone for a newbie...

Well done, Jerome. That does take some good packing skills. I was pleased, too, the first time I kept a pipe lit to the finish. But honestly, now I am more pleased when I can make a bowl last a good long time (more than an hour), even if I need to relight a couple of times. Not only does the smoke last longer, but it is better quality.
The important thing is to enjoy yourself.

I don't think we have a way to measure that, but you seem to be doing just fine. Well done.

I recently made peace with relights. I try and stretch my bowls out as long as I can. I usually end up setting them down for one reason or another and it goes out. No problem. I used to be concerned with keeping it lit all the way. Now, meh. I can take it or leave it. The main point is to enjoy it, if that means smoking the whole thing on one light, do it! 8)

I tend to relight a lot, but I also write while smoking and a lot of times I get distracted, or I set the pipe down to answer a phone call or take a bathroom break, etc etc. Relights are a part of the process for me, but if you can manage to get by without them, all the more power to you.

Hey, i love my relights, try the competitive pipe smoking scene, the whole point is to smoke without relights, some of the most un-enjoyable times of my life haha
but i do agree, when you have a nice smoke that doesnt go out for some reason, its alwys nice

I've never been a one-light smoker, preferring long and slow smokes where the pipe eventually will go out. In over 40 years I may have smoked one or two bowls on one light. They burned hot and the experience was not enjoyable.

I've found certain tobacco's I have require relights more than others. I've gotten a pretty good handle on minimizing relights though (at least from when I first began) and think it just comes with practice.
There are some simple habits you can form to help keep the tobacco burning (lightly blowing back through the pipe-stem, covering the bowl with your fingers to allow air through at certain angles, tamping, etc.) but as others have said, don't be afraid of relights - it's a part of our hobby

A nice easy peasy smoke without much fuss or relights is always a time to be cherished. I had one today with some froggy and my meer. All I needed was a little help from the .38 S&W tamper ichbinmüde sent me in the first pipe tamper swap.
Relights and some occasional fiddling are always part of the game but it's nice to have some smoothh sailing once in awhile.

It is always a nice surprise when that happens. I usually don't have to re-light often, rather use the tamper.

It happens occasionally. Congratulations on this new first. Just be certain the outside of the bowl can be held in a closed palm for about six-ten seconds without burning your hand. If it gets too hot you might be puffing too hard.
