My physique is not quite so intimidating, but I also have had nothing but pleasant remarks and looks. Only my son will cough in admonition. I smoke in public everywhere it's not banned.
Even years ago I would not light up a cigar in a restaurant if anyone near by was on soup or entree. Desert, fair game. Now it's moot anyway where I live and where I've visited recently—or perhaps there are some cities or states where smoking in restaurant is all right?

I've been all over the place and I can't recall the last time I was seated and was asked "smoking or non-?" I'm sure there are isolated pockets where you'll still find ashtrays on tables, but nowhere I can immediately recall (outside tables notwithstanding).

I suppose it can also be attributed that the public in general (myself included) dislike the smell of cigarettes, whereas pipe smoking and cigars are viewed more classy, refined or genteel. The smell of cigarettes is dirty whereas pipe tobacco or cigar smoke have a nostalgic aroma on one's nose.

it is a rare thing to see a fellow friend of the pipe, i had seen a guy smoking a cigarette recently and i took out my mm cob and he though i was smoking weed in it, one of the forum members has sent me gracefully some tobacco and it was magnum opus from hearth and home a strong English tobacco and he looked at me weird when i told him it was not weed. but when i smoke with my friends they do not bother me, they tend to ask me for advice.

I can imagine only younger people will get strange looks.. it's not like someone would bother a sweet old fella puffing on his pipe as he walks home with a news paper minding his own! ;)
The other day at a random bbq I was dragged to, I waited for the children to leave the garden before I smoked but once I got my pipe ready I had most of the guests attention.. and was asked if it was an electronic pipe? lol.
One lady last year asked me if I was smoking 'wacky baccy' haha! She was also intruiged and polite but still a little strange.
Even though I'm in my late 20's, I'd say my scruffy hillbilly look pulls off the pipe a little more naturally than most.

Not so easy around here. Anti-smoking laws prohibit smoking in all public places, including the old smoking bastions of bars and taverns, as well as public parks. Additionally, many businesses have posted "No Smoking Within 25 Feet of Doorway" even though state law says 10 feet. Furthermore, no smoking in a car if children (under 18) are in the car.
FWIW, around here, bars/taverns banned cigars and pipes well over 15 years ago, but allowed cigs; go figure.

I've smoked my pipe in public multiple times, and have never had a negative experience. I do get the occasional weird look though, but I think that's more of the person wondering if I'm smoking tobacco or if I'm smoking marijuana as weed is legal in my state. Occasionally I'll get a friendly comment that my tobacco reminds a person of their father or grandfather.

I smoke all the time at my local coffee shops and no one has ever gave me a look, or said anything no matter what blend I am smoking. Almost wish someones interest would spark so I am not the only one in my entire county who enjoys this hobby.

Brought my danger to cedar point last weekend. Often lit it, took a few puffs and put it back in my pocket holding it in my hands. Sometimes I'd have to relight some times not when I pulled it back out for a few puffs. I did sit at a non smoking bench once and suddenly the loud speakers that were playing music changed to a lecture of not smoking for the comfort of visitors. Thought that was funny.
