last night i opened up my tin of macbaron 7 seas gold.i was first greeted by a wonderful aroma, i detected hints of vanilla and possibly chocolate, but the predominant smell was some sort of alcohol.possibly rum? so a packed a bowl in my ll bean and lit up. it was wonderful smoke, very mild. i dont have the tobacco palate to really describe it, but it reminded me of captain black, only much, much better. the only other tobaccos ive had were mostly drug store blends and two blends from pauls pipe shop. oh and one other little tidbit of information, the sticker on the back of the tin is dated july 2010 so its been aged for a year

What a great tobacco to start with the tinned, more luxury blends! The whole 7 seas line is great, my favorites being Royal and Black. I'm big on the Mac Baren tobys and haven't disliked any that I've tried so far.
Frog Morton is another awesome blend that I recently found, myself. As for the C&D blends, I haven't found too many I don't like, but I've yet to try very many.
As for the drugstore blends, I've tried and liked PA and Captain Black white. I bought some Half & Half, and Borkum Riff. The H&H doesn't smell too bad, but the Borkum Riff smelled like fish bait to me.

Several days ago I opened up a Dan Pipe 2000 (the one where it says "specially prepared to celebrate the A.D. 2000 Millennium) and man, best stuff I've had yet, though I can't say I've really tried all that much tobacco. Maybe it was too good for me to use yet. If it was made in 2000, I guess it's been aged almost 12 years. Anyone know?
I wonder if that B&M has anymore, maybe I'll have to go back to grab some more tins.

The 7 Seas line is really good. I've had the Royal and Regular and love them. Enjoy the Regular more than the Royal, but they're both great smokes. I'm itching to try the Black blend and the Red blend (when the Red is finally released). Also from MacBaren I'm itching to try Plumcake. It's an oldie (first released I think in 1950 something), but overall I hear it's a goodie.

I like the 7 seas royal and I also have the Plum Cake. I had an older guy at the B&M say not to buy tins because they are over priced but I like them. I do not go threw them very fast and like how they are packaged with the pleated paper and all. They just seem better than some of the jared blends. I have had bad luck with the jar blends and very good luck with tins. He seemed to feel the opposite?
Plum cake is nice! Smells like smoky tar and tastes great.

There are several other pipe shops in Michigan who, although not on the internet, do mail order sales of their house blends. Hill & Hill in Grosse Pointe Farms, Campbell's in E. Lansing, and (I think) Maison Edwards in Ann Arbor all do business that way. All of them sell house blends that are not simply relabeled Lane's blends. None of these places have been around as long as Paul's, but they are all pretty well-established. They might be worth checking out. :puffy:

I tried my first bowl of 7 Seas Royal last night. When properly dried I have to say that it was absolutely marvelous. No tongue bite, very smooth and creamy smoke, little hint of vanilla, and maybe a little nutty flavor as well. I agree that the tins are a little pricy compared to bulk prices, but in my opinion, the tins are handier and make great storage vessels for tobacco, coins, guitar picks, etc. I will be ordering more of the Royal in bulk, and I have a tin of the Gold and the Regular that I would like to try as well.

You're welcome! All of these places are worth a visit,if you happen to be in the area. Jim Simon at Hill&Hill does a lot of estate pipes.
