I would strongly suggest not starting with aromatics like 1Q, Captain Black, etc.
I would start with a light or crossover English (Chelsea Morning, Frog Morton, or Epiphany), a Va/Per like Escudo, and a McClelland's virginia. Maybe a Lakeland like Ennerdale Flake, as well, would be an excellent start.
Aromatics can be good, but they almost never taste like they smell.
Also, as others have said, smoke slowly and practice your packing. Also, let your tobacco dry out for a little while before loading your pipe. Take out the amount you want to smoke in a bowl and let it sit on a plate for a half hour or so before loading.
Best of luck! Pipe smoking is a skill. It's not like lighting up a cigarette or cigar -- no one can teach you to do it quickly. It takes time and patience. But for those of us who smoke a pipe, it's one of the more rewarding hobbies out there.
