5star: "Clays hold up well . . . till you drop them."
Very astute observation. My cat took care of two of mine, one from The Netherlands and another one from Germany. What can I say she's well traveled! Now my only clay pipe is out of sight from this most inquisitive feline :D

@jttnk -- I've still got a clay hanging from the ceiling at Keen's Old English Chop House in NYC from 45 years ago ... I *hope*. I'll probably never go back to it again, but then again...
"MacBaren Navy Flake for the first time too. Diggin’ it" -- Brother, you have hit a Real Gem. I LOVVVVE that stuff. The rum top note really adds to the room, & the texture makes for a nice easy roll-out. Buy yup all that comes your way. That stuff is great!

Pipe Notches? I guess I assumed that the clay pipe would be hard on the teeth, so I've never tried to clench a clay. Fuck the teeth, lad. I'd be afraid of breaking the pipe.

I've recenlty bought an original Victorian clay pipe and have had a few smokes in it. It doesn't have any coating on the mouthpiece and I'm aware (through my interest in history) about pipe notches caused by smoking clay pipes, so I don't clench my clay. There's a sense of history with clay pipes as well!

@Halfdan If you want you could try that thing the Irish allegedly used to do and dip the stem of your clay pipe in a pint of beer before smoking. The liquid helps prevent the unglazed stem sticking to your lips, I hear
