As for the dating of pipes, i wouldn't have any idea. Having your Father's old pipe is great. Nobody smokes pipes in my family, if they did that'd be a great piece of have. Make a thread about it, im sure the guys would know somthing more about that. Plus it sounds pretty intresting.

I read a few days ago about using a Magic Eraser cleaning pad for stems. I cleaned up all my stems

beautifully using that. I takes some elbow grease just keep rubbing until you are getting no more crud off the stem and by then it is cleaned up. It returned vulcanite stems back to jet black. After that rub a bit of mineral oil for butcher blocks onto the stem and buff it out after a few minutes. (some use olive oil also)

I found a nice Welington bent with a wind cap installed looks factory the antique store only wanted $10 out the door.used your method to restore works like a charm.
