Just ordered This Little Number from smokingpipes.com.
Been eyeballing system pipes for a while out of curiosity and admiration for the lines of the Peterson 301, and thought I'd pull the trigger in honor of... It's been a while since I bought a pipe. :D
I'm pretty fired up to start breaking in this bad larry. She shan't be no Fake Shemp.
Some may recall my post about hitting TAD quota for Q1-2014; I've now hit PAD quota as well.

Very nice pipe. I have a few Peterson system pipes myself, and although they have caught some flack here lately as per quality I love everyone of mine. Hope it smokes great for you and you enjoy it.

What a gorgeous piece of briar! I bet you'll love this pipe once you've broken her in. It may take a while-- some Petes are recalcitrant, but be patient. You just bought yourself a true classic, and I don't use the term lightly. Kudos on a great choice.

-Irish: I've got a Killarney 150 thus far, and it makes for a lovely short smoke (pretty small bowl) but it's not system (hence my curiosity and subsequent purchase). High Hopes! :puffy:
-Billypm: Thanks! I've had my heart set on a bent Pete for a while, and lacking a System pipe in my arsenal, decided to look at those first. Fell in love with the shape and color and grain. It can be as recalcitrant as it wants; I've got nothing but time. :D

Moses, I have several Peterson system pipes in my collection and love them, including a 301. May it bring you many happy hours of puffing! Enjoy! Happy puffin',
Dave

Very nice. I have a 303 myself, and it is a good smoker, despite the classic Peterson poor drilling on the draft hole!
I really like the System - it does give a fantastic dry smoke where my other pipes gurgle a wee bit.

I have 6 Pete systems, all fishtails (never cared for the Plip mainly because it's a PITA to get a cleaner into it). All of them needed a little re-drilling, chamfering of the tenon end, and deepening of the moisture reservoirs, which I accomplished DIY in a few minutes. One needed some re-fitting of the stem to stop it from wiggling, that took time and patience. But now they are perfect, and all are great smokers. I haven't found that they needed any breaking in. The bowls were pre-carbonized so I just loaded em to the rim and lit em up. They still gurgle a little, but with the army shank I just pull the stem off mid-smoke, shake it down like a thermometer, and blow through it, then put the stem back on and keep smoking. At least I don't need a lap full of dirty pipecleaners :) If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be the Darwin. But as far as briar flaws or fills go I haven't seen evidence of any, and all but 2 of mine are smooth finishes. For the money I think they are excellent pipes, and have no regrets of buying them.

I've got a System 317 with the p-lip. I'm in the category as one of the people that received a piss-poor Pete (but I've got high suspicions that I was sent a display model that's been poked, prodded and generally mishandled). Even so, it's one of my favs in my collection.
I really like the p-lip setup and the system does offer a cooler smoke. I think you'll be very happy with yours.
...Unlike shutterbugg though, I've got no problems at all passing a cleaning through the p-lip. I've got a Killarney Ebony B10 with p-lip as well and also have no issue passing the cleaner through.
Enjoy.

I'm another System fan. I've got a 302 with a P-Lip and it's one of my best smokers. I bought it used in 2007 for $40-$50 and it is one I'll never get rid of.
