Well was hoping to be able to share a photo, but doesn't look like it made it. I'm a bit surprised as I was told he put it in the mail on Tuesday, and still nothing. Coming to Chicago from California...I would have thought it should have arrived by now.
I'll post photos once I (finally) receive it...

Ok, my first estate pipe arrived today! From an untranined and inexperienced eye it looks in pretty good shape to me. I believe the stem may be a replacement as I don't see the logo on it, but it seems to fit nicely. I ran a pipe cleaner through the stem and shank, no goo (or anything really at all) came out on the cleaner. The bowl seems like it has been reamed, it is mostly smooth, but my only concern are some vertical "gouges" - you can't see them in the photo, but they don't seem too deep so I'm hopful they are only into the thin remaining cake. I'm hoping it is cake and not pipe mud covering gouges...
Please share your thoughts on what to do next.
I grabbed a few photos earlier and want you all to take a look.

On that particular pipe. I would do no more than what the seller suggested. As long as there is not a demon of a ghost left behind. Wipe poke pack and fire shape as far as I am concerned.

Nice looking pipe that. I got a cleaned estate from Ebay not too long ago too and all i did to it was a swab with alcohol, polished the bowl with some extra virgin olive oil and away i went.

Never had any problems but that could just be my uneducated palette :)

Thanks for the feedback! I need to get some high proof alcohol this afternoon. Not sure if I can get Everclear nearby. I do have some Scotch at home, which I prefer to put in my mouth rather than my pipe. So once I get it ready I'll pour a glass and enjoy my "new to me" pipe!
In the event I can't get grain alcohol, I'm guessing 151 is the next best thing, right? I know there's some debate on using isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Any thoughts on that?

What is the minimum "proof" you feel would do the trick for cleaning and sterilizing? 80? 100? 151?
Truth be told the idea of a used pipe is still just a little bit 'icky' to me. Even in my younger days, when it was hip to shop used clothing shops I couldn't bring myself wear used clothes. So when it comes to sucking on a pipe of unknown lineage, sterilization is highly important!

I use Bacardi 151. One snort for me, one for the pipe. Everybody's happy in the end.
I also can't get everclear, and the 151's the highest-proof alcohol available to me. I have a bottle of pipe sweetener, but I use it seldomly. Got it from the local B&M.
