This one was paper. Do charcoal filters breathe better?
Never used a charcoal filter in a cob as they're all 6 mm and the charcoal filters are 9 mm. Now that Savinelli is making 6 mm charcoal filters, though, you might want to give them a try—see if they fit a filtered cob first.

Paper filters have some granular, plasticky material inside. At least the Medico filters do. They're not just 100% paper.

Smoked my first cob this morning (MM Legend), which came with a Dr G paper filter. The pipe is great, but my first experience with a filter was not. Didn't like the restrictive draw, the extra-cool smoke, and especially the reduction in flavor. I took it out. I'm smokey now!
Yeah, the Dr.Grabow filters are way more restrictive than the Medio filters that come with MM cobs from the factory. I like and use the Medio filters in my cobs. They have a nice open draw and keep the ash out of my mouth when I hit the bottom of the bowl. Me personally, have never experienced a flavor loss using the Medico filters, I always get a cool, dry, sweet smoke. Anyway, enjoy your cob with or without the filter, they are the pinnacle of pipe smoking in my opinion. YMMV

Some have commented on the lack of flavor associated with using filters. Has anyone experimented with using a filter on a blend they feel is too bold/overwhelming to try and tone it down a bit?

I haven't noticed a lack of flavor with the 6mm paper filters or the balsa filters, YMMV though.

Nice choice of cob. I picked up a MM Legend bent a few weeks ago as a work pipe. It's quickly putting a lot of my briars to shame.
