First Bowl

So, Happy Birthday to me. I turn 42 today and my beautiful wife got the exact pipe that I asked for. For some of you, it may be a bit much, but love it or hate it I now have to fill this beautiful pipe for the first time and am looking for opinions. What should that first bowl be? Opinions?

Happy birthday! A lot would depend on what blends you like but, in the absence of that data, maybe a classic burley blend that won't ghost it. Sure is a gorgeous pipe!

Happy Birthday. I agree it's a beautiful pipe. simple and sleek withe the all black but the God gives it just the right touch of elegance. I would say a burley or straight Virginia.

Happy Birthday. I have this exact same pipe and burley blends smoke great in it. I've been smoking some Sir Walter Raleigh Regular in it for the past week and they seem to like each other.

I just enjoyed my first ever bowl of Early Morning Pipe. I enjoyed it and suspect you might too. I find it similar to the Presbyterian blend I've also been smoking lately.

I never noticed the alligator pipes had a little alligator stamp on the stem. Pretty cool. I've been breaking in my newest pipe with mostly C&D Oak Alley. Partly because it's great, but I also think C&D's crumble cakes make great break-in tobaccos since they rub out into such a nice, soft, short ribbon.

You want a tobacco that's on hand or is readily available without waiting, then go ahead and enjoy that fine pipe -- a sitter with a wonderful texture and bright band. Happy birthday to you, and kudos to your wife for such a fine gift. All of the posted suggestions are great, given that you can have the tobacco today. I'd take something off the shelf, perhaps Tabac-Manil or Old Joe Krantz, but I wouldn't go ordering something and waiting for shipping. Now is the time. Once or twice I've waited for a long time to smoke a new pipe, and and the thought now infuriates me. Don't do that.

in my opinion a new pipe should smoke the old usual blend. The one you reach for when you just want to smoke. Gives you the best idea of how the pipe handles.
