I have that finish what you started attitude towards most things so I always finish every last bit of tobacco in my pipe. It is harsh and hot and sometimes a little wet, but It's just one of those things I do and that makes me me. Plus it is good for heel cake building.

Amen to all preceding suggestions. I add, just for tradition's sake, that if you are concerned about building a coat near the bottom of the bowl consider an occasional half or quarter pack. On those occasions when I only have 20 or 30 minutes of pipe time, I partially fill the bowl, tap out the ashes as I go and smoke down to the end. I enjoy the whole smoke and my pipes like it too.
