A while back, Bradley mentioned smoking the nub of a cigar by stuffing it into a pipe and smoking it. I've done it a couple of times and it works like a charm -- it's really not much different from using an old cheroot holder.
One trick that I do, which someone once told me allows you to save a half-smoked cigar for later, is to blow the smoke out of the cigar butt as it goes out. This keeps that foul, sour, stale smoke from ruining what's left. It's still not quite like a freshly lit cigar (obviously), but it's a big improvement and certainly makes it good enough to stuff in an old pipe later on.

Yes this is called purging. I never leave a cigar unsmoked though, but even while you're smoking it I find purging it every now and then keeps the flavors nice.

We had a "special" kid come into The Humidor once, and pulled out 2x2 piece of white pine that was about 6" long. He had drilled this thing out to make a pipe out of it... no contours, no tapering for a stem or anything... just a block of wood... then, he proceeded to walk around the room asking people if they would buy him some pipe tobacco to smoke... turns out, he was only 16... 8O

I'm a cigar smoker, but not very knowledgable. I never knew "purging" was a thing. It's funny, I do the same thing as you -- purging -- while smoking.

After you purge the cigar and relight, repeat the act by pushing air out as you light and the acrid gases will burn off. Some cigars will develop an ammonia type taste while smoking and this will refresh it most times. Great tip pitchfork! A lot of great cigars get pitched because even longtime cigar smokers are not familiar with the tecnique.

I've tried the cigar nub in a pipe thing before. It works but I never found it really enjoyable. Many love it though. If you haven't tried it, I say go for it!

I just use a toothpick, small nail / pin, stick, etc ...
This looks pretty fancy though:

Hi, I have tried this and found it lacking. The ghosting from the pipe always ruined the taste of the cigar. My step father used a cigar holder, I tried this, though it worked better than a pipe, I learned the taste of the tobacco in my mouth was something I missed, and added to the cigar enjoyment. Just my humble opinion :puffy:

Two of my pipes are dedicated to smoking cigars; one is a Captain Black billiard and the other is a Missouri Meerschaum General. My biggest problem in doing this is finding the perfect fit for the cigar.
