First time this happened to me, normally I have to relight quite a few times. What was it? Perfect packing? Ideal weather conditions?

The downside, of course, is that the pipe gets a bit too hot. I would put it down for a few minutes, but it kept smoking. Would pick it up, puff a couple of times, and it would keep going.

It’s fine, and a nice thing to find a blend that you can work down (although you noted the potentially negative bowl heating up thing), but ultimately it shouldn’t be an end game goal.

I've had it happen... once. A bowl of C&D Visions of Celephaïs in a Missouri Meerschaum Hardwood pipe. It was a nice day with a slight breeze, and I didn't even need to relight after the charring light. It just kept going, and I used finger-tamping to keep pushing the unburned tobacco toward the ember until it was all gone. A very nice smoke. I try not to attach too much significance to it, though -- it just proved to me that it is in fact possible to smoke a whole pipe on one light.

Congratulations!
While that’s never been a goal for me, it happens quite often, fortunately without heating up the bowl.
Different blends smoke differently. When I’m smoking a bowl of Yorktown I can put the partially smoked bowl in a jacket pocket, enter a store, pick up a few items, pay for them, exit, and pull the pipe from my pocket and continue to enjoy the bowl without a relight.
Can’t do that with most other blends.

One time very distracted I did the same thing but left the pipe in my mouth. No one seemed to notice.

I can't remember the last time I smoked a bowl without a relight. I can't remember the last time I even tried. I'm usually distracted watching TV, listening to music, browsing the internet, chatting on this forum, or doing something else. For me relights are just part of the process, but if I make it through on a single light well that's fine too.

I have done this a few times and it is one of the most satisfying feelings you can experience. Right up there with a good sneeze after you've been couped up in a dusty room.

Have you found any rhyme or rhythm as to why/when this happens? (not the sneeze haha)
