Lovely white ash here totally unconsciously** with 3NY while roaming through the threads. Mindless point proven.

My experience with the famous "fine white ash" is similar to others and is that it does happen but only with certain tobaccos and/or when certain conditions are met and it's more of a very light grey than white. Dunhill ribbon cuts and a few Solani flakes are just a few that I can consistently do this with.
There are some tobaccos I don't believe can do this, though, and when I read a review claiming they have I can't prevent that internal voice of mine shouting bol**cks! I'm probably wrong, though. let's be honest :D
The truth is that it doesn't matter and it's not how you tell whether your smoke any good or not.

When I first started I was under the impression that a "fine white ash" meant that the leaf was really high quality. Over the years however, most of the time when I have a bowl the ash ends up being rather fine and grey/white. This leads me to believe that it's more operator technique than anything else.

Smoking to a fine white (gray) ash is possible as many have said. I experienced this zen moment this evening. I think the temp/humidity and smoker cadence are the biggest key factors as mentioned. I was relaxed on a bench outside The Blind Lemon in Cincinnati enjoying some Stanwell Melange in a pipe I made while relaxing and enjoying some live music inside. The weather was perfect; not too hot and not too cool with an ever-so-gentle breeze. No relights either. When it happens, it's kinda magical. Most often than not, though, I smoke too fast and hot and end up with at least some dottle. One thing I have noticed though- when I try to smoke to a fine white ash, I never can. When I'm relaxed and in the right state of mind and don't put much thought into it or when my mind is relaxed but wandering, it happens.

So, when a tobacco burns to fine white ash in a pipe, it means that there were no additives...
I don't think that Dunhill blends such as EMP or Royal Yact don't have additives. They both smoke to fine white ash every single time. Or maybe th

I think craiginthecorn and cosmic really capture the essence here. It is definitely tobacco combined with cadence. I will tell you that it awfully unlikely to happen four weeks in. What you are describing instead is called dottle, and if it was good enough for Holmes to collect and smoke the next morning from all of the previous day's pipes, then it can't be too bad. Heh.

I honestly don't pay attention to the color of my ash. I smoke, I dump and I smoke again. I never understood the fascination with smoking to a fine white ash.

Sorry for that weird duplicate posts, I was typing and then my comment has been posted (not by me), I clicked on edit button and edited my post and posted it again. Confusing indeed.
No, I think that some people think that it means there were no additives. There's a difference. :puffy:
Sorry Michael, just understood your point.
Well, if he removes it now, it makes all of these following posts look confusing.
Removes what? :P
