I have been wanting to sample some Granger as I have been trying a lot of basic burley blends for the last several months. Of course, the smallest sample I could find was 7oz.
I like it, it is even more mild than I imagined. Around the second or third bowl I realized what it reminded me of- Pall Mall cigarettes.
I don’t mean to say that it tastes like cigarettes, I don’t really think it does. I was a cigarette smoker for about 13 or 14 years (ending in 2004) and most of that time Camel non-filters were my brand of choice. Nothing else tasted quite like them. (side note: I always wondered how much “Turkish” tobacco was in them and now I know after trying pipe tobaccos that they really were using enough to flavor the cigarette)
Sometimes I would find myself in a situation where places didn’t have my cigarettes, and I would have buy an alternative. I tried Lucky Strike non-filter, Chesterfield job-filters, and eventually Pall Mall non-filter. Of those, the Pall Malls were my favorite.
I found the Pall Malls to be very mild and smooth. I still preferred my more flavorful Camels, but the Pall Malls were a nice occasional change of pace. And that (after my usually long winded winding around to the point) is what I find similar to the Granger. It is very mild and quite smooth. The tin note was stronger and different than the smoking taste, and I’m glad of that. I actually wasn’t crazy about the tin note. Had an almost liquor-like smell to it. It reminded me of the Velvet I tried recently. Only the tin notes were similar though, that Velvet was the first blend that really bit me, from first taste to the last. I’m afraid to try that stuff again. (based on reviews, most people don’t have this problem with Velvet).
In conclusion, I like Granger as a mild blend to stick in my cobs and smoke on without any thinking. The stuff smokes easy, produces a good amount of cool smoke, and just has zero harshness to it. It doesn’t have a lot of flavor, but there is really nothing for me to complain about with this one, just a good and very basic burley.
Anyone else enjoy Granger? It isn’t about to be one of my go-to blends, but it will be a nice occasional change of pace.
