What is the new one like? To be honest, I'd always prefer to get raw wood in a new pipe's chamber.
The new one is nearly clear and looks almost like dried honey or something on the naturals. On the other I think they mix in activated charcoal. The new coating is much thinner and not tar-like

I think my pipe has the old coating or the stummel is stained inside and out. The bowl was jet black when I got it. In either case, I have not noticed any ill effects from the coating.
