I was reading on a tobacco supplier website that filters or adaptors protects the shank of a pipe from cracking over time as it aids in absorption of moisture, is there any truth to this or is it just a marketing scheme to sell more filters?
I use balsa filters in my Savinelli but my other 9mm briars is being smoke without any filters, all my pipes have metal bands around the shank so assume this will protect the pipe against possible cracking?

I've been looking for deals on 9mm filters, mostly at P&C because they always had a great deal in the past. That's been gone, as have almost all options on 9mm filters, for some time. If anyone runs across a good deal on 9mm filters, please let me know in a PM.

Thanks guys, concerning filters I do love the savi balsa filters but they are in 6mm whereas the 9mm filters are those tampon looking things with charcoal, really dislike them, however I assume they must work as one can clearly see then getting sogged in tar after two or three smoking sessions having said this I prefer smoking without the 9mm filters and as long as it wont damage my pipe then I will continue without them.

The Sav 9mm filters are in fact balsa just like the 6mm. Instead of a triangular shape they have a cylindrical shape with longitudinal grooves machined into them. Works the same as the 6mm filters and the draw is much better than the charcoal jobs. P&C is out of them but SP has them.

I'm skeptical of the filter protecting the briar from cracking. In the history of pipes, this may have happened in particular instances, but it sounds dubious. Some Forums members smoke filter pipes of various kinds ( 6mm, 9 mm ) without filters and the subject hasn't come up. I think adapters are good because they close the airway a little and focus the smoke more, which is more to some peoples' taste.

Thanks guys, still learning here :)
At least all my brairs have metal bands (military?) Since I am a 4 to 5 bowl per week person I doubt that my pipes might get damaged to match. Having said this thinking of getting this corn cobs everyone has been raving about.
