Filters; No Filters; and Resting

Hello from Greece again.
I have a question. In the office I have only one pipe, a filtered Savinelli. I smoke it twice a day with my coffee, except on weekends when I'm away. So on weekdays it does not rest. I clean it carefully and the next day it is ready again and it smokes very nicely.

At home I have five unfiltered pipesr, dunhills and radice plus an old filtered fero.

All the unfiltered need to rest for a few days, otherwise they stink and the taste deteriorates a lot. I also clean them carefully. The fero with the filter behaves exactly like the savinelli. No special rest is needed.

I assume it has to do with the filter which holds the moisture so the pipes rest faster.

Is this really true?

What can I do to speed up the filtered resting, other than buying more pipes? I don't have enough pipes for the rotation, so the few I have don't have enough time.
Needless to say that I am using the same cleaning methods and same tobaccos to all my pipes.

The filtered pipes mute the taste but not much and that's why I prefer the unfiltered. Also the unfiltered are easier to clean.

I usually smoke the same pipe multiple times per day for often weeks at a time before switching pipes. I disassemble them after each smoke, run a pipe cleaner through the stem and airway, clean out the mortise with a cotton swab, wipe out the chamber with a paper towel, and reattach the stem to the stummel.

The filters only trap moisture. It's best to change them after one or two smokes or you'll end up with mortise bacterial growth.

I do exactly the same every time.
I dry well my tobacco also. And I am not a hot smoker.

I enjoy filters but a filter does not make a pipe rest faster. Im not saying you need it to rest more, only that filters dont change what happens in the briar much. They keep everything after the filter drier and clean, but the bowl and shank are basically still the same.

Now I have another thought. All my dunhills are estates so maybe that is the reason. Of course I have treated them with salt and alcool and cleaned them very good after the purchase. I've heard that older pipes pay smoke hot but I don't think this is true.
I bought the radice new form a highly respected seller who is also sponsor here and it was broken in very carefully. It doesn't stink as much as the dunhills but also needs a few days rest.
Irrelevant but the radice is my best smoking pipe. But I much prefer the buttons of the dunhills.

Filters obstruct airflow and therefore create much of the moisture they collect.

A filter will help keep bits of tobacco from traveling through the stem but aside from that I see no benefit to muting flavor.

The flip side is that filters also remove tar and the tastes that come with it. Some flavors can be conisdered enhanced through this process. It all depends on how you look at it.

I smoke my Peterson SPD almost every morning with Haunted Bookshop or OJK. When finished I run a cleaner through to soak up moisture and it sits until the next morning. I smoke my Jirsa Nosewarmer daily for months with an occasional hot water rinse and a scrub with a bristle brush,let dry and started again. I only use filters with aromatics and have three pipes for those.

I understand but the fact at my first post is true and remains.
Now that you mentioned the hot water rinse.... Few days ago I treated a stunk dunhill with salt and alcohol for 24 hours and then rinsed with tap water. It expanded and when I tried to insert the stem it stuck so I had to use the freezer method to be able to remove the stem. Then after days of drying only the bee's wax helped. Now it is as good as almost new.

Expansion has been my experience with water as well. Proponents say it isnt so but it happened to me and I broke a 9mm tenon being stupid. Luckily it was on a stem that was easily self repaired. If I have a really dirty pipe I might use water but now I leave them disassembled to dry for a day or two.

Sorry I forgot to mention that you let the pipe dry for 24 to 48 hours before inserting the stem.My bad and once again sorry.

I’ve water rinsed my pipes FOR YEARS and have NEVER had a stem either get stuck or seen swelling. I reinstall the stem after cleaning. Now truth in advertising, I live in a desert so this may be why. If you live in Greece, it may be that your climate is much more humid. The only time I was in Greece was in November so it didn’t seem that humid to me, but it was late fall. I suspect your Dunhills may have some issues with needing the mortise more thoroughly cleaned, but who knows. It sounds like you are doing many of the right things.

First time I did it in t suck. It wasn’t a tight stem to begin with. It could be certain pieces of briar as well.

Do you take the stem out to clean mortise on unfiltered pipes? If not, do that.

Yes always. Otherwise you cant remove the damp filter or get a cleaner through the mortise.
