I’m not going to write a dozen paragraphs explaining it, it’s just my opinion. I hadn’t even thought about reclaiming the material when I dump the bowl - not for me. As stated, if it works for you or anyone else, enjoy.
That is the end game, to make more people enjoy the pipe without compromising the experience. My reason of this paragraph is usually to state my opinion on an idea before this thread gets forgotten by most, and viewed by people who search on this topic on google. Thats how I found Pipesmagazine. I know leaving it here is going to help someone, so tackling every topic may answer some future lurkers questions.

I fly fish every weekend, and I use meerschaum granules for a similar reason. I don’t use filters or get tongue bite when I’m enjoying my pipe on my patio or walking around the neighborhood. I typically fish shallow, clear water, and most of my time is spent slowly walking and searching for fish. The granules definitely seem to prevent me from scorching my tongue when I see a fish and fire off a quick cast, as my attention tends to wander during those short bursts of activity and I’ve scorched my tongue something fierce a couple of times. The granules seem to provide enough of a buffer that I’ll likely keep using them while fishing. If you can’t solve the tongue bite issue and this method keeps you smoking, it’s probably worth a shot

That seems to be a topic of discussion, but I always felt pipes without activated charcoal seem too harsh. I know people around me who tried pipe smoking who complain the same (some even inhaling and preferring the smoothness of a filter) so I wouldn't put it past anyone that activated charcoal actually helps smoothing things out significantly (including first hand experience). I believe that the conditions in using a normal 9mm or 6mm filter is peculiar since it is made for only certain pipes, from certain manufacturers or artisanal pipe makers, and using a paper to wrap the activated charcoal which doesn't taste great initially and holds into flavors of previous smoke. my method takes the same step as yours, but just the addition of a layer of activated charcoal on top. I bet any moisture absorbing filters would work as long as it acts like a buffer between the pellets and it coming up to your mouth.
