except for those few higher end British manufacturers and few in Italy(Castello&Radice )which pipes mostly come unfiltered

it's not that bad! If I select from a price range between 0 and 100 euros and unfiltered at SP.eu pipe finder I get 29 pages with pipes... Between 100 and 200 euros you het even more pages. My perception was also it was hard, but in the end...

I have two stinger pipes with a good draw. One thing I have noticed with the Peterson 408, not much tar ever builds on the lovely acrylic stem. Is it me or Memorex?

I've never bought a filtered pipe. Maybe I don't know what I am missing. But I doubt it.

I have owned 6 and 9 mm filtered pipes and threw out the adaptor on everyone of them as I would never smoke a pipe with a filter or a stinger. If you need a filter in my opinion you are doing something wrong. All of my pipes smoke cool and dry and I never need a pipe cleaner to soak up excess moisture while smoking.
All of my pipes are American made artisan pipes . Everyone smokes dry as a bone and I smoke my flakes with some moisture in them.

I don't care for filtered pipes. I like the smoke to linger up the stem without much effort. With a filter I find I draw more. I believe that a good pipe almost smokes itself. Not much effort is involved. With a filter I work too damn hard. It kind of defeats the reason I smoke in the first place; just to relax.

The majority of my pipes are non filtered. For me, the paper and carbon filters mute the flavor. I've experimented with smoking two pipes with the same tobacco to test that and it's pretty noticeable to me. The balsa inserts seem to work well. Not sure if those are considered true filters. I have a few 6mm cobs. For those I cut a balsa insert in half and use that to make the draw closer to a non filtered pipe. Works well for me and doesn't mute the flavors. All that being said, I can see how a person might want to use a filter to intentionally mute some tobacco's if they smoke harsh for them.

Only one of my pipes takes a filter - 9mm. It's also my only estate pipe; it's a Porsche Design pipe and it was a case of buy a filter pipe or don't buy it rather than looking around for a non-filter version. Since I liked the design it was an obvious decision to buy it.

I've only ever smoked it without filters and it smokes just fine.

I think the main thing about filters or no filters deals with what you started out with and what you are use to. If you started out using a filtered pipe then it seems perfectly natural. I on the other hand, never used a filter so it seems to be a restriction that I'm not use to or like.

I prefer the draw in Savinellis with the balsa or adapters. However, I find a separate cleaning of the adapter a lot more irritating than just chucking out the balsa after each smoke. Of course, that information is no doubt useless to anyone but me

The trouble I find with balsa filters is that the tobacco tastes of balsa wood which Iam not keen on.
I tried that experiment two identical filtered cobs one with a carbon filter and one without. verses the notorious Macbaren Scottish mixture. The non filtered cob gave me immediate tongue bite. The filtered cob gave me a half decent smoke.

What are we filtering, really? Moisture? Moisture has never been a problem for me. I run a pipe cleaner mid smoke to remove any moisture if any. I find now that the cooler weather is here, a bit of condensation builds

But I’ve smoked a bowl with an MM Cob, filter in, and removed it clean and dry. But I smoke burley. Try that with a wet, goopy cavendish and I can see why some need filters.

For me, yes for filter with aromatics = dry, less bite. For English and Virginia based, no filter means crisper flavors.

It's interesting to me how different we pipe smokers all are. I never taste the balsa when I use those. I've also been smoking Mac Baren blends for at least 25 years (Scottish Mixture is a regular for me) and I've never experienced tongue bite with them. I know in tobacco reviews and forums tongue bite with Mac Baren blends is common, but for me it's never happened.

Ok so now I feel like a dummy. I do not know 1) why does one use a filter in a pipe and from what I read above I still do not know for sure though Granger mentioned "moisture". 2) Depending on the answer to number 1- I then decide if I need to filter? So please, educate me!

Depends on the filter. The charcoal style will remove some tars, moisture and particulates. The balsa is going to remove mostly mostly and a little tar depending on the blend. For me, Latakia and some aromatics build up some tar on the balsa, otherwise I use them for moisture. Keep in mind moisture isn’t a one way street and doesn’t only come from the smoke. I’ll have moisture mostly go down the stem from my mouth while clenching. The balsa absorbs most of this up.

many people use pipe cleaners to absorb moisture while smoking. I never have to use a pipe cleaner when I have a balsa filter in.

I have 3 filtered pipes. Two I bought because I liked the shapes and large bowl size and they weren't made non-filter (Stanwell 185 & Savinelli 616), & one Dr Grabow I bought travelling because I needed a pipe, and all Dr Grabow are filtered now (at least the drug store selection).

I smoke them without filters, and they are fine, though the draw is more open. They do take more time to clean though, as I have to swab out the cavern where the filter would go. I've found adapters trap more gunk, so I don't use them.

I doubt I'll get another filtered pipe. I don't see any advantage to them. I've tried them with filters and they just seem to trap and retain the gunk. With a non-filtered pipe I can just swab it out with a pipe cleaner.

I've occasionally used Medico filters in a Medico or Grabow and noticed no tightness added to the draw. But I've always removed filter and adapter from Savinelli pipes and noticed no issues, the draw is perfect without both. The only filter I always use would be a Brigham rock maple filter.
