I just finished cleaning up this St Andrews and noticed what appear to be fills. I would have thought this would not be possible during the family era...

If I had to guess, I'd say the pipe was made early during the 1979-86 “Transition” period. The shape alone speaks to that. Still, a bit of a QC problem for a first.

That's the same period those weird French 8-dot freehands with the blue "certification" string & seal were produced. (gak)
Whoever was running the show at that time made some strange choices.

My Charatan-era Ben Wade doesn't even have that many fills in it (not to mention the size of them either).

Well, I didn't pay big bucks for it, and I sort of suspected at least one fault from the pictures. It does have some nice grain otherwise.
Perhaps this was made towards the end of the family era, and they were pushing out inventory so their accounts receivable and balance sheet looked good to a prospective buyer...
I like it, and it will probably be a fantastic smoker.
