Ferrule

I have one pipe with a ferrule on the end of the shank.The hole in it is tapered so is the end of the stem that fits into it.If I want to tighten the stem I just push it in and it tightens.I really like this setup.If I buy more pipes this is what I probably will get.

I think they are a great system. I had several Preben Holm pipes and they all had ferrules on the shank,

but I don't know if that's a Danish innovation. ::
Pioneer gourd calabashes used ferrules for their military mounts too.

Those are great mounts. They are also a real pain to do. The angle of the hole has to be identical to that of the stem. I'm still trying to design a reamer. for that.

The fancy doodad on the end of the shank sort of like you see here. Only bored for a tapered bit.
