Ferndown No Star pipes

Just took in three unsmoked Ferndowns Barks that I'll be selling. All are quite large. None have stars designating size. Never seen a Ferndown Bark without stars. Can anyone edify me?

I have an early production Ferndown pipe without any stamping other thsn "Ferndown bark"

Thanks. That was my theory too but couldn't find anything online that says that. You bought it as an estate?

Those sounds interesting, I've also not seen one without Stars. I'll stay tuned.

Leslie Woods catalog from years back: It is with pleasure that I introduce my new range of pipes,............ gone are the production schedules, back is the endless quest for perfection.............. and then we have root briars with silver bands and without, Bark finish including a single spigot and on the last page you are able to see the Ferndown stamp on the bowls.

All have L.J.S. in yellow on the mouthpiece.
