I am currently traveling for work and I brought my pipe along with me. Last night I was in the courtyard of the hotel with a rather large crowd of cig smokers and a few cigar smokers.
I have to say...I felt completely out of place. Everyone was completely staring at me and no one was talking to me. I even heard a guy getting out if his car in the parking lot say "look at this guy, with his pipe" and get a giggle from those with him.
Needless to say, I left and went back much later when the crowd had dissipated.
Made me want to be back home on my portch even more.

That's where you point the pipe at them and tell them at least your tobacco smells better. Or maybe something to the effect of "Man, you don't have a clue. Pipesmoking is way better than that damn coffin nail."

I don't pay much mind of what people think of me to tell you the truth. I do what I do how I do it with good intentions towards all. When people get offended by me or decide to make me the subject of a joke I just chuckle with them an go back to my day. They have no effect on my pipe or tobacco and my pipe and tobacco make me happy = )

I get laughed at all the time when I smoke a pipe out in public. I thought at first it was because of my age, but now I realize that there are alot of people that go through the same thing. It doesn't bother me that they laugh because I have always been the type to not care and I'm happy doing my own thing, whether or not it's cool or socially accepted! That's what I love about being born and raised in America. But to get back to the point, you are not alone my friend. I would rather be laughed at for the things I enjoy with my head held high than give in and be defeated by those who criticize and don't have a clue at what they are missing!

I haven't been laughed at either. They must of been laughing at something far more personal.

I think what you'll find the more you smoke, is when you stick that pipe in your mouth like it belongs there people will pay less attention to it.

Its when your timid and unsure smoking in public that it arouses some suspicion. Just smoke it like you were born to do it, and nobody will make much fuss.

It helps if you can find a cigar smoker to hang with . One has to hate the big box hotel crowd . A pipe or cigar takes time to enjoy . We pipe smokers are a rare bunch and are seen less than a spotted unicorn .

I like to wear really loud Hawaiin shirts for exactly the same reason as I smoke a pipe. Because I want to. People look and they make silly comments but I'm happy knowing that I'm not like them.

Here's how you solve this problem.
1. Don't give a crap about what anyone else thinks of you.
- Most people are clueless idiots, so putting stock in what they think is a waste of time.
2. Pipe Smokers are generally more highly evolved on an intellectual level.
- You are better than them. See #1 above.
3. Pipe tobacco is like the fine wine of the tobacco world.
- Your situation was like an ignorant, belching, Budweiser guzzling retard pointing at your Dom Pérignon Champagne and laughing. Who's really the fool here?
Those people are really behind the times. Pipe smoking is no longer old fashioned. It's the cool thing that only the coolest of the cool know about.

I was at my favorite little local brewpub the other night. Lot's of cigs and one or two cigars around. I lit up a pipe full of Virginia flake to go with my Hefeweizen. Several attractive women decided to move over to my side of the bar. I'm just sayin'... :)

I can say that no one has made comments about my pipe in public. It could be because I'm 6'2" and weigh 240lb.

Years ago I would get doofuses commenting about what may be in the pipe but I just gave them my best Jack Palance smile and they'd move on.

Appearing that you are not affected by others is the coolest response.

Thanks all. I travel a lot and was really missing home. At the time I just didn't feel like dealing with any of it. Next time i will keep what was said here in mind.
Not sure if anyone here watches NCIS but I think Kevin gave me the beginning of my rules. I will always remember rule number 2.

Don't sweat it. Everybody laughs at somebody at some point in time. You are a pipe fag, they are Budweiser drinking goons.
men see me and they are either so amazed and astounded they shuffle their women away uncomfortably, or they laugh at me all the way home.
Here lately, most folks want to know what kind of pipe tobacco I have in there, and tell me about the time they smoked some cherry blend.....

I smoke outside, and I used to have people drive by and yell something or people laughing. I stopped smoking in visible areas for a while because I didn't want people to think I was some pretentious goon they should make fun of. Then I decided I should be able to smoke wherever I want and those people can make fun of whoever; I just ignore it and enjoy my smoke.

Full, I'd like to hear that pickup line!

As to the issue at hand, last time anyone said anything it was 4/20, and a couple of doofuses made a crack. The last comment before that? "Look at this classy motherfucker!". It was derisive, but in good humor. I'd agree with everybody else, ignore negative comments, enjoy positive comments, but, above all...enjoy the smoke.

If people start staring at me, I tend to grin disconcertingly at them. Being a student, in a city with a student-majority population, i get this one hell of alot. Happily, quite a few people are more curious than mocking, and I work in a metal/punk/rock orientated pub where it's not viewed as a big thing at all.
