Seriously, Pappymac has a very good point here. It's art and art is an act of expression, covered by the First Amendment. Without starting a political firefight, the Supreme Court has a very open approach toward the First. Whether you agree with these decisions, burning a flag or giving unlimited money are free speech. How could carving a piece of wood to express yourself not be?

That was my actual plan, I really don't want to go back to the "culinary arts". I like the way you think pappymac! Edit: and cfrued!

I'll bet the FDA isn't adding staff to deal with the influx of applications that are predicted, so it'll be years before they work through the paperwork. How many blenders (and pipemakers apparently) will be willing and able to wait out the bureaucracy and associated bureaucratic sloth?

From what I understand, the only new pipes we are going to see for sale will be factory pipes with little to no variety since even changing the color, texture, or the shape of a pipe would require it to be reviewed as an entirely different product. Because anything handmade is going to end up slightly different they would have to go through the whole SE process and no pipe maker in their right mind would want to subject themselves to such an intensive and costly process for a chance to sell a pipe for a few hundred dollars.
I know of a couple pipe makers who are already transitioning to making things like knives and hatchets. I hope that they can continue to support themselves as artists and craftsmen in these new endeavors but I mourn the loss of the creativity they bring to the pipe world.

I do not know what to say.....should I scream, cry or....I just don't know. I remember saying twenty-five plus years ago when Oregon created a seat belt law that it would not stop with seat belts because if we let the government (or the people of our nation) begin to make laws based upon the logic of what is in your best interest it would carry over to tobacco, sugar, fat, mandatory exercise programs, etc. I do not know how many times people told me that there is no way the government would intrude into peoples lives in such a manner; yet, here we are.

It's for our best interest that this be done. Can't you see the bad that you've done. Come on guys, we can't continue this way. The FDA knows best, we are stupid cattle........
Just voicing the opinions of that poor old sap.......Gun, Thanks!

Although my initial reaction was gloom and doom, I think there is still hope here. I've reviewed all of the documents more than once now and I am positive there is more than one avenue that could be considered a loophole that handmade pipemakers could use if it really comes to that. For now, I wouldn't expect to see any of that even need to be used until 2018 at the earliest.
Brandon Brooks and a few others have spoken with their congressman directly and it seems a surprising few are in support of amending this. (My congresspeople however, are in support of it unfortunately).
With the IPCPR litigation, I think all of us need to get behind them and support them in whatever way we can. If it can be overturned or amended, this is our best chance.
As for the tobacco blends . . . all I can say is stock up now, because that path will be rocky for a while.

Ok Pipemakers, better get ready for an underground market as if you play by the rules, you are toast.
Every pipe maker needs to start creating a list of customers so we can do business without the FDA knowing about it. This is not a hard thing to do.
I am still not sure how this affects pipe tobacco. I understand that blends who went the way of the dodo before 2007 cannot comeback, but what about blends after 2007? Do blends have to be registered after 2007?

If a blend was in production before, on, and after Feb 15th 2007, it gets grandfathered in. But even those grandfathered blends will have to submit their ingredients and any with disapproved ingredients will have to remove the offending ingredients to stay in production after August 8 2018. Nothing gets a totally free ride. Also, all packaging will need to be altered so that 30% of the surface gets a warning label.

Yup.
And it will only get exponentially worse over time. The true End of the World as We Know It will come when hard currency goes away and only digital remains. Then, citizen compliance regarding EVERYTHING can---and will---be enforced by the simple expedient of zeroing out your accounts. The high-tech equivalent of throwing someone outside the city walls in medieval times. Of course, anyone who tries to assist you will have their accounts zeroed as well.

And Big Brother is watching. Has been for some time. (but it doesn't bother me personally, and won't unless this FDA nonsense is mitigated. Then I will want to hide my purchases!)

When I was a younger man, all the local headshops would put flowers in their bongs and sell them as vases.
Today, I would be quite happy to buy a sculpture made from briar.

I was encouraged by the report. Their great research and data team reports that 1% of high schoolers smoke a pipe. That means that at every single , normal size, high school. (say 1500 students). That means at every high school across the country there are 15 pipe smokers. That's a huge future market. Of course the major players would want as little competition as possible.

jparker - I do have a couple of different collections. I collect books, garden gnomes, and small works of art hand carved from briar root.

Maybe they will let us get by with selling small works of art made of briar...
