WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration is allowing vaping brand Juul to keep its e-cigarettes on the market, providing relief to a company that has struggled for years after being widely blamed for sparking the teen vaping trend.

FDA regulators said Thursday that Juul’s studies show its e-cigarettes are less harmful for adult smokers, who can benefit from switching completely to vaping. (bolding added).

The FDA decision applies to both tobacco- and menthol-flavored versions of the reusable product, which works with nicotine-filled cartridges sold in two different strengths. Juul previously discontinued several fruit and candy flavors that helped drive its popularity but were favored by teens.

Juul will be one of only two U.S. companies authorized to sell menthol-flavored vapes, which many adults prefer to tobacco flavor

I think you'd be hard pressed to find doctors who who didn't agree that vaping is less harmful than smoking, or that controlling what flavour's there are has reduced the consumption. I think alot of the harmful effects you could link to the modding of vapes to this stupid cloud chasing phenomenon. Just because people have decided that big clouds are cool and had nothing to do with thr original intention, a less harmful means of nicotine delivery that satisfies the need for smoke at the same time, doesn't mean everyone should be punished. It's a slippery slope and you can cope all you want, but smoking tobacco in any form is not good for you. Sure the stress it relieves may be the better of the 2, but it's not a healthy vice

The legislature legislating is what the founding fathers envisioned. Generally they should arrive at what they feel is the best answer possible, usually through compromise. Often, this process insures no one is fully satisfied. Then, routinely, the President either signs or vetoes, legislature overrides or doesn't, and the Judicial weighs in if required. It's Jr. High Civics we (US citizens) should have learned. I guess it's no longer taught in many schools, at least judging from the lack of understanding often on view here.

You don't have to like the results but, advise me of a better system in existence anywhere. Our, the US, system was designed to be purposefully convoluted, messy with politicians at odds with each other. A very polarizing process, to be sure, intentionally so.

I know how the founders designed it to work, and my question does not put ignorance of that purpose “on view here”.
I typed a much longer response, but deleted that, as I’ll abide by house rules regarding politics, and agree to disagree regarding the constitutionality of regulatory agencies making rules with the force of civil and criminal laws.

The real issue here is if the FDA has just adopted a new standard of “less harmful to smokers” than cigarettes as it apparently did with vapes.

I assume the premium cigar and pipe manufacturing councils will take a close look at that decision and how it might affect the old “deeming” regulations and the age demographics of who actually buys premium cigars and pipe tobacco. There was an interesting YouTube interview posted a few years ago with former US Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) who argued that premium cigars needed to be treated differently than cigarettes by the FDA because of who actually buys them.

But let me add one more challenge the founders never envisioned.

We have technology and medicine beyond any of the founder’s wildest dreams, and far above and beyond Congress and the Executive’s ability to understand, or the people’s. We need some regulation by experts.

The tobacco we love is all graded by the USDA. Otherwise the manufacturers would have a hell of a time making a consistent blend.

And there are folks with hundreds of millions of dollars to spread around and grease the skids of the regulatory process.

My hometown of Humansville Missouri has the largest liscenced growing facility for cannabis in Missouri, if not the world.

Our last governor owns a farm in Polk County, by some coincidence.

Due diligence! Simple really, reading, listening and forming your opinions, not selfishly but, based on what is best for the country.

By and large, they provide the jobs most of us need. Simple really, successful folk drive the economy. Even moderately successful folk buy, houses, cars, pay various taxes, and such. Shareholders, rich, poor and various funds, retirement funds to name but one that effects may of us... provide jobs.

Of course, hard work, education, and such is entirely our choice. So, while vision and imagination are important components for success, it's one's willingness to strive and improve. Each of us can either bemoan our fate or... improve our chances for success through hard work, making ourselves valuable to others. Choices have consequences. It's all a matter of choices we make through life. Easily satisfied or driven to improve one's lot in life. Choice! Our station in life is simply the result of our up bringing and, as adults, choices made.
