cant honestly say I put much thought into that. If I do get ahold of one, it'll have to be saved for days when I got plenty of patience. Usually dont mind relighting at all, but if it becomes one match one puff.. I see where your going..

I'll throw my lot in with the classic Billiard.

As I'm guessing many of you can concur, this was my first pipe, and it left the indelible impression on me that "THIS is what a pipe should feel like". I've recently acquired (yes, PAD.../sigh/) a few slight variations on this by way of the Medico Jet Stream pipe, which for some reason *really* tickles my fancy. To me it speaks of the mid-century modern aesthetic in woodworking; of slick and shiny cars and the Jetsons and the great FUTURE being right around the corner...hehe  In fact they tickle me so much I fear it's approaching addiction status... At any rate, they feel great in the hand, and work better than a laser for pointing at diagrams or poking holes in a fellow philosopher's arguments. Much tastier as well.

I just thought to clarify: I meant that MY favorite shape is the billiard because it was my first pipe; and I was GUESSING that whatever shape other people smoked as their first often became their preferred pipe shape. Am I correct in this prognostication?

I still don't have a billiard. 8O I find that ironic, since in my head the picture that forms when someone mentions smoking a pipe, it's a billiard, closely followed by churchwardens from the Lord of the Rings.
I'm waiting for the right one. In the meantime, my bulldogs, volcano and apple are my regular rotation.

I'm partial to just about anything "bent". The only time I really smoke my straight pipes is when I am just sitting around. Bent pipes are just easier to let "dangle" while I am piddling around.

Interesting thoughts here. When I originally got into pipes, not that long ago, the shapes I liked were straight apple and billiard shapes. To me, they were just the classic shape that I saw in photos from the 50’s and 60’s of dads smoking their pipes. Bent shapes didn’t do it for me. However, at some point, I saw a ¼ bent bulldog that I really liked along with another full bend pipe and I ordered them. I just love the look of that bulldog and the full bend pipe fit so perfectly against the lip and rested nicely on my chin. Suddenly, I found myself drawn a little more to bent stems. If it’s a pipe I’m going to clench, maybe reading a book or just kicking back, I’m often reaching for that bulldog or another bent pipe. I still like the straights, they still scream classic pipe too me, and I really am starting to like the look of some of the poker designs, but I tend to smoke them less and only when I know my hands will be free to hold the pipe.

This is the best chin hanger I have . It's an Irish Seconds that just is perfect for clenching.
