Me, personally, I love Mario Grandi pipes. I think they're beautiful, smoke perfectly, and are very reasonably priced. I've got several that I've picked up all for sub $100 and couldn't be happier. I can't afford crazy expensive pipes, so I'll take my Mario Grandis and Savinellis all day.

Really love my Savinelli Roma 673KSs, and VERY much love my Radice Rind Pure faux bamboo.

In factory pipes, I enjoy many of the standard brands: Savinelli, Stanwell, Big Ben, Peterson (I've always been lucky with their QC), Nording, Chacom, BC. Genod, Vuillard, MM cobs ... I've likely forgotten one or two.

I don't know much about pipes but I know what I like. I'm amazed at the pipes Savinelli and Nording produce for the price. With where I'm at in my pipe smoking career, I can't really spending a whole lot more on a pipe although I have my eye on a lovely Vauen pipe but I can blame that on LOTR.
That all being said, I see stuff from Russian and Japanese carvers that are almost more works of art than they are pipes and if they were in my price range...

Smokers complain that when they purchase a pipe, a cotton pipe cleaner won't go through stem, shank and to the bowl.

You will not ever have that problem with a Boswell pipe. They are drilled perfectly and they smoke great from the get-go.
A new pipe I bought from Boswell's (a straight poker) failed to pass the pipe cleaner test with a JB Longs. I think one can find poor workmanship in most, even if most carved work is solid. I'd claim 'rarely' rather than 'not ever'.
