I did deep thinking once. We were watching the drillers working on a well out in the middle of nowhere. MY money... at 500 feet, still no water. I was thinking deep on that one. It finally did hit water though. No tobacco pipe, just drill pipe on that one.

Sounds like you tapped a deep source of inspiration for your future plans, although it was probably 99% perspiration getting there.

I would say it's not the pipe but the tobacco. But then again maybe I'm just spoiled by my pipe selection. As long as it's a good smoker I think you can achieve deep contemplation using it. Tobacco on the other hand changes my smoke much more drastically than which pipe I'm using to smoke it. Some blends make me contemplate more on the tobacco than anything else and some blends don't stir up any contemplation at all. There is a happy medium ground that I find causes me to get lost in contemplation. Pipe doesn't matter for the most part in my opinion.

I've been watching a few videos of guitar players with collections of their preferred instrument and them showing how each guitar brings a different tonal quality to the fore, even if they're the same brand, or model.
I think the tactile aspect of pipe smoking is an intermittent revelation, almost deep.

Honestly, every time I smoke a pipe it's a time for deep contemplation, relatively speaking. I've never been comfortable smoking a pipe while doing something else so it's become the one thing I do while doing nothing else. And I agree about the tactile aspect of it. I tend to pay a lot of attention to the pipe while smoking it.

My Gamboni Bodog. Just nothing like smoking that with a good Virginia in it and a book. I prefer VA's and VaPer's when I'm in contenplation mode, otherwise it's usually Condor, St. Bruno, 1792 Flake or Erinmore Flake.
(sorry, no time to figure out how to post a picture... I've been burned by this website too many times!)

Here
Since discovering that my Viking Classic (slightly) bent Dublin handles a folded ODF flake perfectly, it's become my go to thinker.
It feels good in the hand and mouth and is relatively care free after the flake ignites.

One aspect that hasn't really been mentioned yet, but may play a role for some smokers is the materials. Natural materials, or materials sourced from expeditions/trips on one's own. Albatross bone, horn, amber, briar, morta, meerschaum, fossil or even found native metals or something forged from gathered ore. While many things are manufactured out of sight, we can find local artisans who will work with us on a project if we were so inclined.
There is also the possibility to create a Frankenstein sort of pipe. Bringing together various parts from two or more pipes to create something new, but with the known histories of it's predecessors built into it.
I am enjoying the contributions to this thread. Thanks for sharing what works for you.

Savinelli Capri 824. Large bowl, slow burning, infrequent relight necessary, great taste of tobacco - doesn't get in the way. Out in the patio in a Summer evening with a whiskey.

I tried to find pics of the pipes mentioned by those who were not able to post pics. Some were difficult for me to get so these may not all be correct. Feel free to post a correction if needed.
winton mentioned a large full bent Polinski pipe

elpfeife mentioned a Dunhill shell bent billiard

dunhillshell-600x326.jpg

mso489 mentioned a Ferndown smooth bent billiard; Ser Jacopo blast w/serpentine square shank/stem; Missouri Meerschaum large/deep bowl natural bent Dublin; Johs extra large semi-rusticated slightly bent apple. I had the most trouble guessing what these may have looked like, I picked the Ferndown smooth bent billiard as the one to post.

hawky454 mentioned a Gamboni Bodog. I am guessing this one. I found the pic in one of our threads in a post by misterlowercase http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/italian-vs-english-please-educate

I have an unstained rusticated Luca Vanetti bent egg that is my deep thought and reading pipe. It’s light enough to clench and hangs perfectly while reading, and the rusticstion has the perfect feel when being held. It’s my best smoking pipe too, burns cool and draws easily. Love that pipe!

I don't know that I have a specific pipe that I prefer for it. I will say that I do my best thinking in the shower. Unfortunately, there isn't a great selection of pipes that work in there.
My second best place is walking in the woods with a pipe. I prefer clenching, so many of my pipes are bent. I like them to be light, but with thick walls to keep them cooler when the wind is up. My favorites for this right now are my Eric Paulson Devil Anse (though it can get hot if the wind is going), my Jirsa bent Rhodesian, or my Peterson Donnegal Rocky 69.

Again, these are my best guesses as to the pipes mentioned. Feel free to correct any mistakes.
