Peterson. I know, I know, but quality control schmality control. I love the way they look and love the way they smoke. Not a huge system fan (or P-lip for that matter), but just about every shape simply screams PETERSON! No other brand epitomizes the pipe smoking experience for me like this one. I own more Petes than any other brand and will get more.
And if you buy wisely and/or from reputable dealers (I always buy estates to eliminate the break-in period) you will drastically reduce the odds of getting a lemon-- and have recourse if you do. But I've never had a QC issue in all the years I've been a Pete owner/operator.

peck, the OP limited his discussion of factory pipes by putting a 200.00 price limit, do you have reading comprehension issues? LOL
I totally agree that for smoking properties nothing beats a Castello for a cool, dry, flavorful smoke, which is why I would buy an estate Castello for less than 200.00 over many new factory pipe.
Now under 200.00 for new, then I would go with Radice, Mastro de Paja,Savinelli, and Don Carlos. In my experience the Italian's make the best smokers for under 200.00. I have never had a bad one and I have smoked probably around 30-40 Italian pipes over the years.
Now in the estate market for under 200.00 besides Castello, the older Radice/Ascorti era Caminetto's are some of the best smokers out there. Also on the estate market you can buy a plethora of Upshall and Ferndown pipes which are also very good smokers.

Sorry, I didn't see that. Didn't know they made pipes that cost less than $200, lol.
Seriously though, why the dollar cap?

I second the vote for estate Castellos. I picked up this barely used state Castello this weekend for in the mid 200s (half the price of a new one). It's a great looker and I bet it smokes like a champ.

GBD and Comoy, mid 80s or before. Why buy a new factory pipe?

I love my Peterson St. Patty's Day 2013 pipe. It is I believe my best smoker and do plan on getting more as soon as I'm able. I plan on trying other brands as well, of course. But so far I think I'm going to be a Peterson and Nording fan mainly. I need to pick up a Stanwell eventually. I don't believe I've heard anything bad about them here on the forums. I'm about to load my Peterson with some Hearth and Home Mohawk River. I seem to be having difficulty keeping the blend lit in my other pipes, regardless of drying time. Maybe I just got a bad batch, I don't know. But if my trusty Pete won't smoke it, then maybe it's just one of those blends I'll know not to run back to.

peck, that is an Occhio di Pernice isn't it? It is awesome looking and both sides are loaded with birdseye. The mid 200's is a very good price for a pipe that retails for over 600.00.
Anthony, if you have not tried an Italian made pipe that has a shank measurement of around 4.3mm you should think about trying one. I think you will find the smoking properties are excellent. Pipes with a measurement like that smoke very dry and it feels like the pipe is smoking itself. That is one of the main reasons that the Italian brands are so popular. If you decide on looking at an Italian pipe, ask the seller to check the shank measurement for you.

For a new pipe I would say Savinelli in that price range.
For used Caminetto, Radice, Castello.
Although look at this beauty:

I'd have to say Peterson of Dublin est. 1865 is my favorite factory pipe make. I have nine already and two more on the way today. They've all been wonderful smokers that look great too. I'm also pulled to Peterson because my heritage is German/Irish mostly and it was founded by two Germans in Dublin Ireland.

I would say Castello would be my number one factory made pipe. Peterson would be a distant second.

2. Savinelli

2. Stanwell
I will buy a Dunhill (new) in 1.5 years for my 50th bday. Why not? It will be cheaper than the $2500 Omega watch I bought on my 40th.

Wow, there's been a lot of activity on this thread since I went to bed this morning!
@Peck, the reason I put a cap of $50-200 is because that's what 90% of us guys spend on new pipes. Plus, even though they may be called factory pipes, I think once you get past the $200 mark there is a lot more hand work that goes into them, so a lot of guys don't really consider them factory pipes at that point.
