Thanks for describing this process. I'll be giving it a try some time this winter. Have you noticed an changes from smoking fresh vs. cellaring a month of two?
It needs a few days just to "settle down" enough to be smokable, but after a month or so the flavor is pretty consistent from that point forward. A word of caution, in the last batch I made I used too much honey and the end product was slightly sticky and it burned slightly hot. The casing shouldn't have the viscosity of a syrup - it should be watery, with just enough honey in the water to flavor it.

Thanks for the advice. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The chemistry of burley's (alkaline) being mixed with the honey (acidic) acts the same way as adding a little Virginia to the burley to avoid "burley bite".

:?: Got me, pardner. Very well could be. Is that also why a little burley smooths out a VA? I had never thought about acidity being a factor, but the steaming process helps quite a bit, too.
Thanks for posting that -- I'll have to try to think about other blends in those terms, too. I wonder if commercial blenders consciously consider issues of acidity.

C&D's Crooner the deer tongue and alcohol flavor really do it for me.

I like Carter Hall for an everyday smoke but Solani Aged Burley Flake is a real treat.

Mac Baren Golden Extra and Burley London Blend, as already recommended, are the gold standards IMHO.
I'm smoking some Cumberland right now - does that count as a burley? Or too much of a hybrid? Highly recommended. Love this stuff.
Angler's Dream is up there among my favorite burleys. Underrated, IMO, and superior to OTC blends. I wish Russwluld make some more of this!

Lanes: BL/WB is a great all day smoke, this is my go to smoke everyday.

P.Stokkebeye: Burley

Altadis: J4 Mild Burley

H&H: Classic Burley Kake

MacBaren: Burley London Blend

I have not tried Scottys Butternut Burley, but have seen the great reviews on it.

I would love to try this blend, but P&C is not shipping to Canada right now as far as I know.

I love Burley Tobacco !!!!!!!

I have been loving an ounce of Old Joe Krantz I just finished it. It had a year on it. It's taken all my will power not to buy 8 ounces. Also Project Xylophone, by Smokers Haven, I have been toying with it I think it is pretty good.

I also enjoy Bald Headed Teacher, and Haunted Bookshop, but as has been stated I just can't get enough Butternut Burley. It's simply awesome.

Timely- 4noggins has a Butternut Burley in their bulk selections. Not sure if it's the same as Scotty's, but it is VERY good. :puffy:
