I've always really loved the bulldog shape and intend to buy one when I decide to finally get a new premium pipe (all my briars are estates or seconds), so I'm wondering what brands make your favorite bulldogs. I'm looking for things like smoking qualities, handling, etc. not just aesthetics

I have an old Mastercraft Natural Algerian briar bulldog that has to be one of my best smokers. Only thing is the bit isn't the most comfortable, but I can overlook that. Maybe I'll dig it out later and post a pic.

Tends to be a popular shape. You'll likely get lots of recommendations.
Yep I didn't even post an hour ago and already have a fair amount
Bulldogs (the dogs, that is) have large heads, a stout body and short legs
To me, the quintessential bulldogs are Peterson’s SH Squire and Hudson

I'm probably going to go with a Peterson, I want one in general and I'm especially fond of the Sherlock line.
And some oldies

Did I say I like bulldogs 😁

The only ones I dislike are the tall ones and ones with elongated shanks/stems - NOT true to (my) form
Those Danish ones do look very Danish

If you spend $150-250 and buy a reputable brand eg Peterson you should get a decent smoker, provided the drilling is right.
Just be aware that not all Petes will pass a cleaner, if that matters to you

>85% of smoking quality is technique

Yep, even my unmodified cob smokes wonderfully. I've seen a lot of people complain that Peterson's quality control isn't what it used to be (a common complaint with many brands) so I'll just train myself to recognize good and bad drilling and get one at a B&M.

If anything QC at Peterson has improved since Laudisi got involved

Quality control at Petersons have improved exponentially under Laudisi ownership. Kudos to Sykes Wilford and his team.
Most of my new Petersons were bought in recent years and I have had no issues with any of them

If you purchase from SmokingPipes you can return the pipe if it is not up to scratch.

I have only one new Pete which I’m not 100% happy with (Poor quality vulcanite stem).
It was purchased shortly after the Laudisi takeover. I suspect it was leftover stock from the previous ownership when quality control issues were rife.

That's great to hear, yeah I'd imagine there would be a backlog of poor quality stuff because not selling it could create a shortage.

I always considered Bulldog pipes to be straight, though there are some bent. Most bent pipes tend to lean towards the Rhodesian bowl shapes, imho.

If you aren't looking to spend a bunch, consider the Comoy 80s

Or a Sav 504 or 510

Or the Pete 150 (second in my eyes only to the 03)
