Visiting family over the holidays means finding old books on shelves. One such book was a Little Golden Spine kids book about Farmer Brown who … Smokes a corn cob pipe!

You just dont see this kind of illustrations anymore. It warmed my heart to see this. The presentation throughout the book was this is completely normal and did not make a fuss about pipe smoking.

In one of our old Golden Books (from 60s), Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, when the bear family goes for a walk to let their porridge cool, papa bear is smoking a pipe. My kids noticed and pointed it out, just like you dad!

IMHO smoking a pipe is a healthy alternative to all other vices. It should be celebrated today. Vices are human nature and anything that keeps kids from vape, weed, crank or whatever synthetic is a positive.

I'm feeling that one. Our little guy recently turned 4, and it seems like he went from learning his ABCs, to reading half of the words in his bedtime books to us, overnight.

Those Garth Williams illustrations are so distinctive. Always a bit quirky, but comforting at the same time.
