Some numpty in Germany who was travelling 'free' (ie he had not bought a ticket), got off at a scheduled stop for a smoke break only to take too long so he clung onto the train as it left the station, reaching speeds of up to 175mph

"...the train powered on towards Nuremberg at up to 282 km/h (175mph), until federal police brought it to a halt about 30km away"

Did they just stand on the tracks and hold their hand up?

I actually knew a few gutter punks back in my younger years who hopped trains in the U.S. to get from place to place and while part of me loved the romanticism of it all, the fear of riding on one of these trains put me off from ever considering doing something crazy like that.

Hopping a bullet train? Definitely ballsy but incredibly stupid!

I knew quite a few students who jumped trains back in college. But, their stories weren't quite as romantic as the ideas people put into books or movies. From our college town, most trains ended up in an industrial train yard where chemicals and nasty stuff is moved from train to train. But, one guy made it to New Orleans, where he had to call someone to come and get him before his people considered him officially missing.

I gave up train jumping after running into this guy last time...took the romance right out of it.

Wait for the tunnel to get him.

Some guys are deft at trainhopping. I sometimes used to check in on "Hobo Shoestring", who must have traveled all over the US, always knew where to get off, find water, camp, and which train he wanted to jump next. His demise last year was rather sad, nothing to do with trains though. The old hands would not entertain 175mph inside or out, I imagine.

I'm kind of shocked that smoking is permitted on stations in Germany - it hasn't been in the UK for a long time. Perhaps the guy needs to learn about chew or snuff.

I thought that was rather odd too.

I thought Europe were far stricter on smoking that us Brits, or maybe he was just having a 'crafty' smoke? Whatever, I'll bet he needed a strong drink when he finally alighted.

Europe definitely isn't stricter than us on smoking, despite the EU indoor smoking ban there are plenty of bars and cafes in France and Italy that just ignore it (or at least there were a few years ago when I was last over there). Smoking is I think a bigger part of the culture over there
