On the British side you would have Stanley Baldwin, Neville Chamberlain, Tolkien, JB Priestly and H G Wells. I believe on of Baldwins pipes was on display at The House of Pipes in Bramber in West Sussex until the museum closed.
Through my research it seems Lee Van Cleef's meerschaum is a Peterson, but the first shot could be a Wellington instead of Peterson. It's confusing because I don't know the relationship between WDC and Peterson. There certainly appears to be some relationship based on these pipes.
In researching another matter I found this pic of CIA Director Allen Dulles smoking a cob instead of a briar. The text said he gave a speech at Princeton University in April, 1953 but don't know if the pic is from that time or maybe earlier. I guess he wasn't worried about being seen wearing a suit & tie and smoking a cob.
Filled with Capstan Blue standing proud in not only a gorgeous Apple by Bo Nordh it was one of his personal pipes. A happy day when I was able to nab it, keep it smokey.
I posted this several months back. Famous Hollywood Director George Sidney was an ardent pipe smoker. He directed such hits as Pal Joey, Showboat, Bye-Bye Birdie, Viva Las Vegas and many other great hits. He was a patron of Kramers Pipe store in Hollywood. He would have Al Kramer band his pipes with silver or gold and had a special stamp made to have his name engraved on his pipes. Most pictures of him show him holding or smoking always a different pipe.I have been lucky to obtained two of his pipes: one is an early KBB and the second one is this original Ben Wade. Interesting is the finding that many of his pipes have slit-like damage to the rim. He must have had an edge on his ashtray where he knocked the pipes against ?? Great history !! Hoppes
Storm P. , who was a famous artist here in Denmark, smoked pipe and collected many pipes. We even named the Calabash 'Storm P.' after him. You can see his collection of about 450 pipes next time you are in Copenhagen, at the Storm P museum.
