William Hartnell (1908-1975), British TV and film actor best known for his role as the first Doctor in the BBC TV series 'Doctor Who', first screened on this day, 23 November 1963, and still running. Here he is in an early episode as The Doctor, smoking a calabash. I have tried to find out what he smoked in it but so far with no success. No subsequent regeneration of The Doctor has ever smoked since, which I suppose is a sign of the times.
