Famous Historical Pipe Smokers

I'm a history buff and was researching famous historical pipe smokers. I'll start with an obscure controversial one.

Literally a whole bunch of people qualify. Seems like Admiral Chester Nimitz was a pipe smoker if I recall correctly.

Ya its a bit of an oxymoron. I just never seen him mentioned in these types of discussions. Hes more regionally famous I would say.

I own a couple of historical ones I have posted on here over the years. I think Jim Inks has a couple of famous dead persons pipes.

A couple I've discovered recently, Alan Watts, "philosophical entertainer" and one-time UK Pipeman of the Year, Warren Mitchell (who actually declined the award, but accepted it on behalf of his alter-ego Alf Garnett, a solid billiard and St Bruno man).

A few that I can recall are of course Albert Einstein, Douglas Mac Arthur, Mark Twain
Gerald Ford, Bing Crosby & Van Gogh!

There must many hundreds of them!

I've been reading through Caro's 5 part series on LBJ and came across this fella. Former TX governor Coke Stevenson was well-known for his pipe smoking. He spoke little, giving his thoughts only after listening intently to all discussions while he smoked his pipe. It was considered the trademark of his character.

He’s depicted in the streaming series “The Pacific” with pipe.

In his biography I recall reading a note he wrote to his family from Korea, advising them that, should they get him a pipe for Christmas, it should be no larger than the picture he’d drawn in the letter.
