Red Foley visited Springfield Missouri the summer of 1946 to judge talent competitions for aspiring pretty girl singers.
Since my mother had headlined at the 1946 Camdenton J-Bar-H rodeo the radio station KWTO invited her to audition before Red Foley, live on KWTO.
As my Grandma and Aunt Mildred would tell the story they helped her get ready and calm her nerves and went along as moral support, and Grandma had to sign for her to be on the air.
Mama said they had her sit on a stool before a microphone with her guitar, and the musicians were just fabulous, and she belted out Jealous Heart to Red Foley, and just absolutely nailed it.
When she’d finished Red Foley and Ralph Foster came over to her and were just amazed a 20 year old girl could sing like that.
Red Foley said little Miss Lois, you sing like a bird and you are as pretty as a picture.
Now, can we hear you yodel like Pasty Montana?
Twenty years later, my Daddy would come in from the milk barn and fetch Mama’s guitar and she’d sing for us like she sang for the rodeo crowds and for Red Foley.
And whenever she did, my Daddy would always say, thank the Lord you can’t yodel, or else you’d be in Nashville and I’d be all lonesome here by myself.
