@bullet08, in another thread, advised us to smoke those tobaccos which tempt the ladies to sit on our laps.

When this happens to me (which is becoming so frequent as to be obnoxious), I must drive them away I'm afraid, being a married and chaste man. Still, Bullet's words got me wondering which tobaccos in your experience have elicited the most compliments from family, friends, or random strangers?

There are 4 which my wife and children exclaim are their favorites:
  • MB Vanilla Roll Cake
  • Just For Him's Whiskey Biscuit Gravy
  • Boswell Christmas Cookie
  • Boswell No Bite DeLite
Although I jested about having to drive ladies away, I do not jest when I say that I have overheard my children debating each other over which of these 4 smells the best.

Which tobaccos do you remember most evoking public praise?

[Cue those who need everybody to know that they're drowning in their own testosterone, popping in to say that they can't fathom giving a damn what anybody else thinks of their pipe smoke.]

The last bit in brackets made me laugh.

Back in the day there was a local blend called "Irish Puff" that I smoked for years (till they ruined it). It never failed to get lots of oohs and aahs whilst out and about. Stokkebye's Nougat does the same. I'm a mere lightweight aromatic guy though, and most seem to get compliments, even Capt Black Gold.

The first tobacco I tried was that kind of tobacco, no-one I knew argued when I had that in a pipe.
If they still made it I'll probably still be smoking it.

Petersons Scottish Mixture is one I don't get evil looks for, whilst it's received better than ODF, it's not the same acceptance.

Funny story about "Irish Puff"...
I was smoking that blend once when I met an actual Irishman. We were at an Irish Music weekend retreat. When I told him the name of the blend (thinking he would enjoy it, him being Irish), he only laughed. Then he told me a "Puff" in Ireland is a homosexual male.

I've always thought HGL and RLP-6/CBW had the best room notes and my wife agrees. There was a blend sold by Phifen Huber in Munich called Rezidance that smelled amazing but they discontinued it, it was probably a Dan Tabac or K&K bulk but I'm not sure which one.

I'm likely bias toward HGL & RLP-6/CBW though, I had an uncle who smoked it and I remember the way his house smelled as a child and I loved it.

I have no doubt my wife can smell the difference between various blends that I have going, but she hasn't ventured a preference so far. (She says pipe-smoking makes me "smell like a gentleman", which I count among my blessings!)

Truth be told, I've been a little hesitant to ask her to pick favorites, lest certain blends start to become discouraged. She likes the tin notes of most things, but I can't help but feel DFK is especially bad for my breath. So I pick the timing of those blends carefully.

I'm eager to try Vanilla Roll Cake (both for my enjoyment and to see how it goes over with company on the porch), but want to empty a few jars before I crack a new tin. :)

Occasionally my wife will remark that something I'm enjoying smells good, but I never really take note of it, so I'm afraid I'm no help. She grew up with a father and grandfather who were dedicated to Latakia, and that's kind of what she expects (and rarely gets) but she's noticed other blends in a positive way - I think one of the St. Patrick's Day blends the last time she made a comment.

Not a testosterone thing, but I really don't smoke in public as such and yes, if I was out in the open air, wouldn't be looking to please anyone else and likely not looking to get near them, lol, just as a general rule!

I’ve gotten complimented on some of the most surprising blends.

Full Virginia Flake - a huge hit with the ladies
Old Joe Krantz - the first time I got complimented on this was at a company bbq, by a ridiculously fine female, then she had to end it with those dreaded words, “it reminds me of my grandfather!” The last thing you want to hear from a potential “opening”. I thought this was just an anomaly but I’ve gotten compliments on the aroma on several occasions.

I’ve never had any compliments from aromatics, surprisingly.

I smoke in public a lot, usually in travel center/rest area parking lots when I'm riding somewhere on my motorcycle, also in parks and park-like places wherever I happen to be, but no one has ever said anything about the smell of my pipe, one way or the other. In fact, no one ever has anything to say about the pipe at all, which sorta surprises me, because I'm invariably the only person around smoking a pipe. This may be because there are usually people around me smoking cigarettes or cigars (cheap swisher type cigars usually) or sometimes weed, along with the vapers. I'm just another peculiarity, a little more peculiar than the rest.

Friends say nothing either. My better half only describes the scent the smoke leaves on me, i.e--"Smells a little of anise," or "it smells a little sweet," or, more often, "You smell like tobacco." "Bad?" I'll ask. "No, not bad."

But it's possible she's just being kind. I smoke mainly untopped Burley.

On one occasion, while walking a local trail and smoking a pipe, I stopped and sat on a bench to relax for a few minutes. There was a slight breeze blowing in the direction of two women who were approaching. One lady said as she was walking by, I love the smell, it reminds me of my grandfather. It was an aromatic I know that much, but I can't recall if it was 1Q or Captain Black. That's the only time a woman has commented on my pipe's aroma.

The only other comments I get are from my buddy that I hang out with, and we'll occasionally comment on the aroma of whatever one of us is smoking.

My wife was a smoker of Luckies and the French cigarettes (Gallois was it?). So she is pretty tolerant of my many and various blends.

However, she actually called from the other room and commended the aroma of Lane Limited HGL. It surprised me that she could smell it that far away that soon, and I take that as her high recommendation.

Also, HGL appeals to me because it is an aromatic that complements the flavors of the tobaccos rather than masking them, what I've heard called tobacco forward.
