With them having such a small bowl do you still pack them the same as a normal sized pipe, also Jay keep me informed how it's going making your own :)
Thanks

Jay, my plan is 'no threads'. I want to use the o-ring method. The o-ring (a standard hardware store item) sits in a groove in the base of the bowl and 'screws' into the threads in the pipe. Yes, the threads are proprietary. They are a '4-start' thread, meaning the bowl screws in with a quarter turn.
This is a bowl being turned, image from 'net.

Wiz, IF I succeed in making bowls, I won't be selling them. I will be giving them to members here, just because. Watch for progress. I got my lathe set up this week, still need to get the band saw going and will pick up a small drill press on Monday, I hope. I have a complete machine shop, but it is still in storage 150 miles from me. I won't be able to move it until next year sometime... I hope it happens anyway.
So, when the wood shop gets going, I should be making some goodies.
Here is a blog that documents the bowl making process. Part 1 is shown, part 2 is the next blog entry.

Looks good, will you be using Briar or some other wood ?. I had never heard of Briar until i became a member here so don't know a great deal about it, think i read somewhere that it's a root but anymore than that i have no idea .

I won't be using briar unless it comes from a broken estate pipe. I will be using oak, live oak, any fruitwood I can find and whatever turns up. I really want to try soapstone.

Yes, I like the cob bowls. I tried to buy unfinished bowls from Missouri Meerschaum, but they quoted THIRTY THREE BUCKS EACH! I may just buy 10 more of their 'seconds' for 33 bucks and try that. I can always give away or smoke the rest. The first 10 I got produced 10 fine pipes. No issues to speak of.

You read correctly. Briar is the root of the White Heath (Erica Arborea), a shrubby plant which grows slowly in France, Corsica, and the Mediterranean region. The wood is VERY hard (just ask any of the pipe-carvers on these Forums) and nearly (but not quite) fire-proof. According to George Latimer Apperson in his Social History of Smoking (published in 1914), briar began to be used in Europe for the manufacture of pipes around 1859.

Strictly speaking briar is not a root, it is a more of a tumorous growth that grows with the root of the Erica arborea plant that acts as a water store, pretty much as the humps do in camels.

Jay.

I wonder if bowls implementing your o-ring method would work equally well for the smaller threaded Alco pipes.

I've never owned a Falcon or Alco(yet), so I can't even wager a guess.

I've always been curious about Falcons, but never bought one. When PAD strikes my limited pipe budget there's always another priority.

Interesting idea for the push in style to replace the threaded bowls

Brilliant idea Ken using the rubber grommet instead of cutting a thread. Brian, if it works on a Falcon I would guess it would too on an Alco (same company but different thread). Also likely to fit the metal pipes put out by other manufacturers.

Jay.

The o-ring isn't my idea, I just hope to use it. The brilliant things about it are that the o-ring is commonly available and the size of the 'tenon' of the bowl can be varied to fit any pipe. I don't have an Alco pipe, but all we need to know is the outside diameter of the 'tenon' and it's depth.

I sent an email to the fellow who has the blog I linked to. Hopefully he will help me with tips on bowl making. Also, I found a source of various woods like olive and maple, in sizes that are affordable. Rockler, the wood working place, lists wood for turning, in perfect sizes. I think I will be getting some blocks of wood for 'normal' pipes from them also. At least we have one source now.
Oh, I don't have an o-ring bowl yet, but I have read that they 'screw in' like a normal bowl. A quarter turn, the rubber ring just acts in the base threads, just like a normal threaded bowl.

I wasn't even looking for a Falcon, my sister picked it up and said if you don't want it put it in the bin, i am in the process of trying to clean it up a bit, but overall it's not bad condition for a pipe that's 50+ years old. Looking for a larger bowl for it though.

Wiz, I think most Falcon pipe smokers would prefer a larger bowl than those commercially available. The bowls I have are ok for a short blast but I for one would like a longer smoke from my various Falcons. Of course only one bowl is needed to serve any amount of pipes...that's the beauty of them.
Regards,
Jay.

And Jay, only one pipe is required to service any number of bowls. That is what is cool about them, I think. The pipe itself can be continuously smoked for days on end, with no detriment to it. Just swap for fresh bowls.
