To me the photo looks like a very poor fake itself as does the pipe, there is zero chance Nanna was tricked into thinking that briar and vulcanite abortion was genuine, somebody just did a half assed job of photoshopping that pipe into that picture.
She says she was tricked and didn't have her reading glasses on at the time. No matter how expert we are, we all have a moment of distraction and unfortunately scammers are specialists in noticing.

ATTENTION!
All pipe collectors and dealers.
Unfortunately, there are pictures in circulation of me holding pipes made by Sixten Ivarsson and Bo Nord.
Unfortunately, not all of these pipes are original. I didn't have time to study the pipes closely. I didn't have my reading glasses on, without them I can't see the small details. Therefore, these images cannot guarantee the authenticity of the pipes.
The attached picture is unfortunately one where I am holding a not original pipe.
I am sorry for the inconvinience it may have coursed, and of course I'm embarrassed by this.
Best regards Nanna

Thanks! So the photos are real but the pipe are not. It's sad that someone used Nanna to try and pass off fakes. If she as willing to be photographed with them I would've imagined that this person was decently trusted by her.

If I'm buying an Ivarsson, Nordh or Jess pipe (or other of the greats) it will ONLY be bought from a well known, reputable dealer. Not from a Facebook group, or some random guy with a table at a show, ebay, etc.... I still would approach with caution, but I would feel far more confident buying from somebody that is well known in the community or a company that has experts who can verify authenticity.

The pipe market seems like too small a target for AI scammers. I worry more about the banking system, the energy grid, the Defense Department, and other sectors with massive cash flow.

Making a paltry thirty grand selling phony high-end pipes ain't nothing.

It's safe to assume that if they got access to Sixten's granddaughter Nanna, Lars's daughter and well-known pipemaker and furniture designer herself, they're surely not some guy. Also if she was cheated, a buyer may think that if she had the pipe in her hands, that pipe is real. In this same post, there are those who believed that the photo was false because they consider it impossible for her to be confused, imagine that they can deceive a somewhat gullible collector or one who is eager to find that grail.

Hasn't the matter of fake pipes been settled? The calculation being, that anyone who can fake a pipe of this standard, would be much better off selling them under their own name? And that the demand for pipes themselves mean criminals would be unlikely to target their market audience? I mean, Burberry baseball caps they ain't.
That the rational analysis. But the real world is not rational. Times have changed as well. From what can be seen on social media, there seems to be a proliferation of very talented carvers in a very competitive market. They may well make more money making fakes of super high end pipes rather then selling their own low demand product. And even if they can't, they may believe they can. That's the irrational part. If the world were overwhelmingly rational, there'd be no crooks because being dishonest takes work too. Then there are the people who knowingly buy fakes so they can show them off to the unsuspecting public, as in, "Hey, I'm wearing a Rolex/smoking a Dunhill, I must be rich."

Yeah, maybe the pipe scam is just an interim "job" while the crooks hatch a really big draw-down at Fort Knox.

The "online factor" is the Great Equalizer.

Meaning the fakes can definitely be spotted in hand, but as long as there are fools who are willing to buy stuff online from flaky sources, it doesn't matter.

You can't even talk to such buyers because they WANT to believe.

It's the same psychology as the Nigerian Scam. People's brain chemistry changes when they think fortune has smiled on them, and a rare opportunity is presenting itself.

That Nanna got "laterally entangled" in this shit just shows how ruthless and streetsmart the crooks of the world are, and how Old School and trusting SHE is.

About 7-8 years ago a "high rated" eBay seller began listing obvious fakes, including a Jess pipe that sold to some schmuck for $8300. A number of people contacted the seller and eBay about the fakes he was putting up, Marty Pulvers even contacted some of the carvers who stated that the pipes were not their work. eBay did nothing and the seller continued to be a "high rated" seller after the brouhaha.

The calculation you mention applies to 99% of pipes, but with with prices ranging upwards of 20 to 30 thousand for some Bo pipes, no one is going to make that kind of money using their own name. So where where the scam pays off is with collectible pipes that get low to mid 4 figures and up. Faking a Sasieni isn't going to pay off, Faking a Nordh, Jess, Ivarsson, etc level pipe will pay off.

Granted I have no facebook or other “current” pipe media, but this smells quite fishy.
