Fake Dunhill

What makes you think it's not legit? Shape numbers correct, wording looks legit, just the made in england got cut off.

Why do you think it isn't real? Looks like a Dunhill from 1976 is my best guess. 4204 is a saddle stem Bulldog, which your pipe is. The lower lip of the button looks like it was sanded down a bit at some point. What exactly are your concerns?

The fact that the stamp is a touch off center. That and the stem took a good bit of wiggling and elbow grease to get it flush. Other than that, I'm praying its legit because I love the shape and it'd be my first Dunhill.

Be careful with the stem! If you need to swab out the mortise with q-tips and iso, do it! Don't try to put the stem in if the briar is wet, or of course, take it out when it is hot. To get an easier fit you can use the lead pencil trick or the ivory soap trick. The stampings being off center should be of no concern, especially on a shape where there is so little real estate to put them, I know I've seen it before, as I'm sure others have.

Without inspecting the pipe in person, I couldn't tell you for sure. I can tell you that the problems look relatively minor and don't, in themselves, indicate a fake to me.

Probably a real Dunhill with a replacement stem, replacement stems are really common.

Are you anywhere near a pipe shop that deals new and estate Dunhills? A pro could probably suss out authenticity

fairly quickly through visual cues, and by handling the pipe. I want to go along with Forums members who think

this is a Dunhill with a replacement stem. But knock-offs are always with us, a huge industry of pirated goods. In

any case, they are correct in attributing the best to your woman friend who has done a bountiful kindness. The pipe

has great value for that, no matter who manufactured it.

Ok, look at the picture of the button end of the stem. The slot ends a basically the same distance from the ends on both sides, now forget the slot, and look at the shape off the button, it's not symmetric. Again, I would say, at some point someone worked on the stem, probably to remove bite marks. If it were a replacement stem these things would be less likely both in the case of it having been made from a blank, and especially if someone had hand cut a new stem.

Not everyone that makes stems is good at it and not everyone that owns a Dunhill gets the expensive stem maker's stem. A lot of pipers just chew their stems to bits every couple years and replace them with fairly cheap ones, myself included.

How does it smoke? Your girl apparently went to a lot of trouble to find just the right pipe. The only way she got taken is if the pipe doesn't fill you with happiness and joy. If you enjoy the pipe, don't worry whether it's fake or not. The only time it would matter is if you went to sell it and, personally, I would never consider selling the pipes my wife has gifted me. Let her see you enjoying the smoke and don't let her see you doubting its "authenticity".

Is it possible the pipe could have slipped out the backdoor of the Dunhill workshop as a reject? I've read of that happening with other pipe makers. An employee takes the pipe the home and end up in an estate sale somewhere.
