I would think that it would depend on how cold. Being here in Alabama, 40F is what my body has adjusted to as extreem cold, but then this last week it has been in the teens, which lets my body know that there are colder temperatures than I have never experienced.

Maybe if the pipe was way below freezing when you light it up, there could be a problem. But, I would think that there would have to be several situations set up just right to make this cause a problem for the pipe.
up here it's gone below zero and it's weird how used to cold you can get. Last week 20 something was horrible now it's fine.

True that. I lived in the desert of Southern Baja California (Mexico) In the year 2000 for a few months. The daytime highs were 90-110 degrees F, night 65 degrees. At night you would get so cold you would shiver, even though in a normal climate 65 is pretty moderate.

I used to leave some pipes in the garage. Last winter (which was relatively warm for MI), I pick up a nice briar and smoked it before letting it warm up to room temp and it cracked. I'm still mad about it but since then I've not kept pipes out in the cold.

I do keep a cob in the car that lives there and haven't had any noticeable adverse effects from lighting it up cold.
