Extreme Cold and Pipes?

Just wondering if leaving a pipe out in below freezing overnight after a smoke could damage the pipe?

I do it every night. I clean the pipe I smoked on the way home from work. That one stays in the pipe rest on the dash. 3 more pipe are in the 3 pipe case on the passenger seat, ready for tomorrow. I’ve never had a problem. These aren’t basket pipes, either. All my pipes, except the meerschaum, get this treatment regularly. Below 0 degree lows in Ohio right now.

Im not a pipe maker but I think the big issue is making sure it comes to temp before smoking again. There really isnt much else to do once its done and a time machine has better uses that remembering to bring in a pipe

I would think that it would depend on how cold. Being here in Alabama, 40F is what my body has adjusted to as extreem cold, but then this last week it has been in the teens, which lets my body know that there are colder temperatures than I have never experienced.

Maybe if the pipe was way below freezing when you light it up, there could be a problem. But, I would think that there would have to be several situations set up just right to make this cause a problem for the pipe.

I think to be more specific, like if it's the last pipe of the night, you're walking the dogs. You don't finish the bowl. You don't bring the pipe in- because of your partners wishes, anyway, if there's any dottle left, is there a chance it could Crack the pipe if left outside?

As your profile says you are in GA , I would agree w/@cosmicfolklore . A would also agree w/@tschiraldi , with a note : he indicated he cleans his pipe on the way home (not sure the Hwy Patrol would approve ) .
My point is , we hit -15* here a couple of nights ago . If I had a lot of moisture in the bowl , not sure that would turn out well .

Ditto. I packed and smoked out of briar and cob pipes that were in my car in subzero temps. No issues, other than maybe more relights due to the cold. That's one frosty smoke!

I think I had some frozen moisture in one pipe. The draw felt a little restricted, but it opened up after it thawed out while smoking. No issues.

I hold the after work pipe in my hand the first 5 or 6 minutes of the drive home before lighting to warm it a bit.

I clean it after I pull in at home, lmao! I don’t ever leave tobacco or dottle in the pipe when I’m finished. I would worry about leaving it in the pipe overnight in very cold weather.

Dump and scrape it first and it’ll be fine.

If you have to go out in freezing weather to smoke pipe, it definitely has gone over being a hobby. I would call it physical necessity.

Hasn't been a problem in my experience. I try to bring my Zippo in, but it even that wouldn't be damaged if it got left out overnight.

Yep. I have a physical necessity in going about my daily tasks, like commuting to work, during good weather, and bad.

I would certainly bring the pipe back inside. If you forget it thats another thing. Smoking kept it warm. Repeated exposure to prolonged heat and freezing cold is what damges wood on the exterior of a house. Its not going to be good for a pipe either.

I have gone to cobs in the winter and dry the tobacco out “extra crunchy” to avoid bowl condensation. 2-3 hour dry time. It really helps.

We don't smoke from pipes made out of the same wood as the typical wood used for siding. Briar wood goes through extreme temperature shocks - from room temperature all the way up to where tobacco is on fire in a matter of seconds. Freezing temps aren't a problem.

Only issue I have ran into is when removing the stem from the pipe. Its cold, more prone to being brittle..... and snap.....
Now I just let it come back to room temp before I take it apart and try and clean my pipes.
