I use Flitz polish to clean the stem, and follow with Obsidian oil to seal and polish. If the stem is very oxidized, I use a Magic Eraser first, then polish with Flitz, and finish with Obsidian. Flitz is non-abrasive, non-toxic and USDA approved.

My regimen is typically:

800

1000

2000

Wet papers

8000 & 12000 Micromesh sheets (12k yields scratches not visible to the naked eye)
Buff with

White Diamond

Meguiars Plastic Polish - I think this product does have some benefit in retarding oxidation (my Upshall stems hold up a lot better than most others that I see).

Dino, I read the Safety Data Sheet for original Flitz Polish and it said "Causes damage to organs (central nervous system) through prolonged or repeated exposure if inhaled."
I don't know if heating up the stem polished with Flitz would have this result, Ie., release the chemical in question; it might not, but it is food for thought.

Jay: The same here, our Pharmasians /Apoteks are not selling no mineral oil but instead they do have this paraffin oil(is not that paraffine for lamps,no flammable)which is practically the same as Mineral oil, despite of this I was idiotic enough to order me this little macigal falcon of obsidian oil,15ml $10 with shipping, advertisments did have their effect
