Radice. Less the $200 for a hand made, uncoated and lifetime pipe in their Rind rustication (like Castello Sea Rock but sometimes, depending on the pipe, a bit more subtle and very much like an actual rind). For slightly more, Musico makes a very nice pipe. More like a throwback British pipe with some Italian flair.

I met Musico (assuming it's the same guy) while he was working at a shop in Rome. That was back in the late 80s. Wonder if he's learned to smile yet? puffy

Got a couple of Jobey. I have to admit that I noticed them because the finish looked so much like a Castello Searock. They were used and cheap so I couldn't resist. Not crazy about the stem work but it's functional. For a rather inexpensive pipe they smoke surprisingly well. puffy

Jobeys are stylish looking pipes, designed with a flair. I had one for years that I enjoyed, but I finally traded it in. Its draw was a little restricted. They started in France, moved to England, then to the U.S., and about ten or twelve years ago, back to France. So it is a little hard to tell where estate Jobey's come from.

Hello.

I think the first thing you should find out is that it is a good pipe, made of good briar and well worked.

Once you see that you can jump over the brands and find good pipes for the money spent.

You will also avoid falling into the trap of buying a bad pipe from a reputable brand, which exist.

Greetings.

If you have a little time, you might enjoy browsing the estate pipe section of smokingpipes.com to see if something catches your fancy. You can find artisan pipes in all price ranges. SP prices are not necessarily the cheapest but there prices are fair and they put their estates on sale once or twice a year. There are detailed descriptions both of the pipe and condition and you can return the pipe unsmoked if you're not happy. (You pay the return shipping.) SP also does an excellent job refurbishing their estates—not something that can be said for most vendors on eBay. BTW, I have no connection to SP LOL. Just nothing but good experiences with them.

I honestly didnt look into that, but you could be right. If you pick a IMP or AKB I think you will get a push style tenon. Maybe contact smokingpipes as they both have IMP and AKB. Altinay for sure only has push in tenons or go up to to spigots and military mounts.
I understand from some that screw type stems are better because they don’t wear out the shank over time.

I don't own one yet, but I hear that the "S. Klein Design" line from Scott's Pipes is serious bang-for-buck.

Going a shelf lower, he also puts out cheaper "Burner" pipes which, so far as I know, are comparable to basket pipes. There's nothing wrong with that, for those looking for that; but, I think that you're looking to pay a little more money for a lot more value.

Or, going a shelf above the "S. Klein Design"' line, he also puts out his "Handmade" line, which costs more.

But apparently this "S. Klein Design" line, at around $75, is a darn nice smoking pipe for the price. I intend to get one.

Other pipes which are supposed to represent similar bang-for-buck include BriarWorks (I've had my eye on their Belge shapes) and Ropp (I've had my eye on their Vintage line).

As a new pipe smoker and now forum user, along with some other newbies I’ve noticed the last few days, I’m wondering what pipe brands to look into. Now, I’m aware of the much loved Dunhills, Castillo’s and factory pipes as in Peterson, Savinelli and Chacom’s. But, I’m talking about the other’s. The underdogs or maybe upcoming artisans, or just a great smoking misfit. A pipe shopper could easily get lost in smoking pipes website with all the names out there. Other then the well known’s, what are some should be known pipes you love or just kick around?
honestly. Whatever ones really grab you. Look at them and when your brain says "hey now that's a pipe" start asking around about how people like that brand. If you bought a random pipe the chances are it will be good.

Laurent,
I have many fine briars. I own a 1956 Dunhill Shell 104 which many espouse as Dunhill’s best years—the oil cured, Algerian briar years—the sought after years. Guess what? It’s thin walled, smokes hot and is no better or worse than many other briars in my collection.

When I want to enjoy my tobacco, I reach for one of my Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman ( I own eight) and I savor and enjoy my tobaccos.

There are pipe collectors on this forum, I suppose I’m one, and there are tobacco collectors and there are the nicotine addicted and there are one bowl per week guys and ten bowl per day guys. You’ll find it all here. But that doesn’t change the fact that a great smoking pipe is not related to its cost.

Welcome to the forum!
Agree with you. And I love your dog! What a beautiful beast!
