1 year isn’t that old with a tin’s seal leaking.

People around here have smoked tabac 10 years and upwards on tinned tabac with a less than perfect seal.

I personally use to take a fairly moist paper towel and place it with the tabac in a ziplock baggie until I felt a slight bit of moisture. Depending how bone dry, might take 2-4 days to rehydrate a little.

Shards of terracotta work great. Free, tobacco doesn't stick or easily wiped off. Reusable. Small.
To speed up rehydration, place jar in the sun for a bit. Stir and check.

if you are willing to re-hydrate with fruit maybe mix some of the dry aro you have 1:1 with some sopping wet black cavendish. That's gotta be better than fruit and it will work. I have accidentally left a bowls worth of tobacco out from time to time and it dries to a crisp at my altitude 7000 feet in the rockies. Anyway, I take the dried stuff and mix it 1:1 give or take with some fresh stuff that's moist and presto a prefect bowl.

I knew an old pipe smokers in the 70s who would keep an apple slice in his tobacco pouch but he said he always threw the apple out every night.

On the other hand, my grandfather used orange peels - not the fruit, but the peel in his tobacco pouches. The oils from the peel can rehydrate some dry tobacco and the citric acid keeps mold from forming.

Spray some distilled water on it and mix it up. Seal it in a gladware container and check it every other day. Start light with the distilled water and add as needed.
