We had a cool light show a couple of nights ago outside of Livingston in East Texas but nothing like that. I'm betting y'all are right.

The only way that could be real is if it was a transformer blowing. I've never seen lighting start low and then go up into the sky.
I have seen slow motion videos of lightning going up and meeting a bolt mid-air. It's rare, but it happens, especially from taller structures.

Check out the 3:00 mark. It shows upward lightning from 3 different buildings in Chicago.

I think it's for real.

I saw something similar in the corner of the Texas Panhandle in June of 1982, while headed SW down US-54 between Dalhart and Stratford. It was around 3:00 am, and things got so crazy I pulled off the road to watch.

There was multi-colored cloud-to-ground sheet lightning in addition to the crazy upward crawling cloud-to-cloud stuff in that video.

Maybe ten seconds between discharges.

Very little thunder (!?). No wind. No rain (yet). No traffic. It was totally quiet. Watched it for fifteen minutes or so until the once-in-a-lifetime slow moving Storm From Another Dimension went over me.
