What do y’all do when you decide that what you reached for wasn’t really what you wanted after all? Finish the bowl? Put it aside and light up something else? Just curious.

I started pipe smoking in Australia where tobacco is way too expensive to dump it; so I do the same as Embers; once I fire up I'm committed. (Plus most of my regular rotation are large size Pete's.)
FWIW, even though I don’t have to deal with the astronomical taxes you do (thank God), I am the guy that uses a pipe cleaner until it no longer has a white patch on it ?. Way too frugal to toss out good tobacco. I don’t dump mine, but I will put it aside like @Richmond B. Funkenhouser said, and come back to it later.

I'm not in Aus anymore but I've no idea what the import duty is here; I keep ordering tobacco and so far it's all got delivered without import duties... :)

But I found out the hard way that pipes get hit with 60% and a couple of Irish tweed caps got hit for about 110% ?

For years I would just power through the bowl, whether I was bored, tongue bite, too loose/tight pack, now as I get older I dump the bowl and either pack more and grab something else. Regardless of the tobacco.

That is why I almost always smoke more than one pipe at a time. When you get bored mid bowl, smoke on your other pipe for awhile and you’ll be amazed at how well the flavors pop when you switch between the two. Always keeps it exciting. After awhile I just get olfactory fatigue with one blend, smoking two very different blends at the same time has been my work around.

Usually I persist, and more often than not the bowl gets better. Sometimes the ember will settle down and improve. Rarely do I just dump most of an unsmoked bowl. I can't remember the last time, but I guess it has happened.

If the smoke goes South, or never gets good in the first place, I'll dump it. Life is too short for bad tobacco. There are a few blends that I'll nurse, down to the very end. But, even then I am mindful of not charring the bottom of the chamber. There's always more tobacco.

I think we tend to have an automatic reaction to wasting lots of things. Goes all the way back to dinner as kids and your parents telling you not to waste food (there are poor children in (it is not PC to say where anymore lol) that would want that). As pipe smokers, there is a part of many of us that struggle with tossing out dottle or tossing out a bowl just because it was not floating our boat. Its like that little bit of unburned tobacco is precious to me...my precioussss.
